The northeast monsoon runs roughly November to March and lands hardest on the east coast, so the Perhentians, Redang, Kapas and Tioman see rough seas, suspended ferries and seasonal resort closures in that window. Aim for about April to October there instead. The west coast keeps a different calendar: its southwest monsoon, around May to September, mostly means short afternoon rain over Langkawi, Penang and Pangkor rather than cancelled boats. So the months that suit east-coast sand and the months that suit the west are not the same months.

Both is a real option, but it is a flight and not a drive: Peninsular Malaysia and Malaysian Borneo are separated by the South China Sea, with no road or rail between them, and Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu takes about two and a half hours in the air. The peninsula gives you the capital, the old port towns from Malacca up to George Town, and two island coasts. Sabah gives you Kinabalu Park, the marine park offshore, Sepilok and the Kinabatangan. Take one for a short trip; take both only with close to a fortnight.

Peninsula highlights sit comfortably in eight to ten days: the capital, a run south to Malacca, then north to Penang and Langkawi. Adding Borneo pushes it to twelve or fourteen, because Kota Kinabalu costs a flight each way and Sabah's own distances are long once you head towards Sandakan. Under a week, stay on one side — the capital plus one island, or the capital plus George Town. Then set the days on the plan against that shape and read what the offer says about validity.

They answer different questions. Langkawi is the sand-first choice: Pantai Cenang and Tanjung Rhu for the beach, Panorama Langkawi up Gunung Machinchang for the day off it, and Kilim Karst Geoforest Park for mangrove. Penang puts you inside George Town's UNESCO core instead, with Batu Ferringhi as the town beach and Penang Hill behind it. If sand is the point, take Langkawi; if food and old streets are, take George Town. The ferry between them runs about two and a half to three hours, so doing both is realistic.

Batu Caves is the short one, on the northern edge of the city, with 272 coloured steps up to the shrine. Malacca is the long one, about 150 kilometres south and two to three hours by bus or car, and it rewards an overnight more than a dash. The highland options, Genting and the Cameron Highlands, climb out of the lowland heat on winding roads — exactly the sort of ground where a mapping app is better downloaded in the city than halfway up. Pick one per day rather than stacking two.

Both work on the peninsula and they suit different legs. Kuala Lumpur to Penang is about an hour in the air, or roughly four hours on the ETS train from KL Sentral to Butterworth, followed by the ferry across to George Town. Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi is about an hour and a quarter by air, or a ferry from Kuala Perlis or Kuala Kedah. Malacca is a two-to-three-hour bus and needs nothing else. For Borneo there is no choice at all: Kota Kinabalu is a flight.

Do not assume it does. A Malaysia plan names the territory it covers, and Singapore across the Johor Causeway is a separate destination even though the Shuttle Tebrau from JB Sentral to Woodlands is a five-minute ride. Thailand is the same story whether you reach it on the ETS train to Padang Besar in about five and a half hours, by road at Bukit Kayu Hitam, or by boat from Langkawi to Satun.
