Before buying a travel eSIM for a phone purchased in mainland China, check the exact device variant and where installation is permitted. A phone family can include versions with different SIM hardware. An eSIM option in settings is useful evidence, but it does not settle every regional or carrier restriction.
This checklist is for preparing a trip abroad. It does not describe buying a domestic Chinese mobile line, which follows a different process. Start with the manufacturer's information for your own device, then confirm that it can use the travel product you intend to buy.
Identify the phone you actually own
Save the model number, the country or region where the phone was sold, its software version and whether it is locked to an operator. On iPhone, look in Settings, General, About; tapping the model entry can reveal the model number. On Android, the menu and regional variants differ by manufacturer.
Compare those details with the manufacturer's current specifications and Horizon's supported-device guide. Do not buy solely because a friend's phone has the same marketing name. If support needs to help identify the variant, send the model details, not a password, verification code or complete installation QR code.
Check where installation is allowed
Apple's mainland China eSIM guidance, checked on 13 October 2026, says that a supported iPhone purchased in mainland China can activate a foreign operator's eSIM while outside mainland China, with location services enabled. It also says foreign operator profiles cannot be installed while in mainland China. This restriction changes the usual advice to install before departure.
If that applies to your phone, plan access to reliable Wi-Fi after arrival. Keep the destination address and transfer instructions available offline before flying. Do not assume an installation failure at home means that the QR code should be scanned repeatedly or the existing line deleted.
Keep your normal number in mind
Horizon travel plans provide mobile data, not a local telephone number or SMS service. If you need messages sent to your regular number, ask your original carrier how receiving them abroad works and what it charges. Keeping the SIM installed is different from enabling mobile data on it.
Where the phone supports the required lines together, select Horizon for mobile data at the destination and enable data roaming on that line. Disable data roaming and automatic data switching on the home line unless you intend to use its paid service. The phone's exact labels may differ.
Prepare installation details and a fallback
Keep your secure order page and the installation guide accessible. Save the hotel address in its local spelling and a written meeting point for your transfer. A second device or a printed copy can be useful when the phone you are installing on is also the only place you stored the instructions.
Check profile storage limits before making changes. Removing an existing domestic profile can create a separate reactivation problem. Ask the original carrier before deleting it; contact Horizon before attempting to reinstall a Horizon eSIM. A previously used QR code is not guaranteed to work again.
Choose the plan after the device check
For a multi-country route, compare the exact included destinations on the Europe eSIM page. For a Turkey-only trip, use the Turkey eSIM page. The regional name does not replace the destination list, and mobile reception can vary in tunnels, buildings and remote areas.
Match both data and validity to your itinerary. Validity does not start until your eSIM first connects to a supported mobile network at your destination. If any device detail remains uncertain, contact Horizon before paying, with the model and sales region ready. That is a more useful starting point than guessing from the phone's age.
