A Black Sea summer: staying online in Bulgaria

Bulgaria's Black Sea coast is one of Europe's best-value summers: the UNESCO-listed old town of Nessebar on its little peninsula, the long sandy stretches of Sunny Beach, the quieter charm of Sozopol, and a lev that makes everything go further. It's a trip of beach days, coastal buses and old-town wandering. Whether you need to buy data for it depends on where you're travelling from.

EU traveller? You might already be covered

Bulgaria is in the EU. On an EU or EEA plan, "roam like at home" means your data works along the coast at your home rates — nothing to set up.

You'll want a travel eSIM if any of these apply:

  • You're coming from outside the EU — the UK, Switzerland, the US, or a neighbouring non-EU country.
  • Your home plan's roaming cap won't survive a week of maps and photos.
  • You'd rather keep a clean, separate data line.

If so, set up a Bulgaria eSIM on home Wi-Fi before you fly and switch it on when you land at Burgas or Varna.

What you'll actually use data for

  • Maps and coastal buses between Nessebar, Sunny Beach and Sozopol.
  • Beach-club and boat-trip bookings along the coast.
  • Old-town wandering through Nessebar's churches and lanes.
  • Translation, restaurants and video calls from the beach.

Three to five gigabytes comfortably covers a week of this kind of travel.

Tip: Bulgarian uses the Cyrillic alphabet, so a translation app and live maps earn their keep here — cache offline maps and download an offline language pack before you go, and street signs stop being a guessing game.

If Bulgaria is one stop on a bigger trip

Bulgaria borders the wider Balkans, and plenty of summers fold it into a longer regional loop. When your route touches several countries, a single regional plan beats a SIM per border — the case for going regional is in One eSIM across the Balkans: Albania, Kosovo & beyond, and a Europe eSIM covers a wide span of the continent on one line, as set out in One eSIM for a multi-country Europe trip. Not sure whether EU roaming already has you? Read Roam like at home: when EU roaming is enough (and when it isn't).

Off to the Black Sea? Grab a Bulgaria eSIM before you go and let the coast, not the settings menu, hold your attention.
