A port morning on a Caribbean sailing has a shape you learn by about the third day. The ship is alongside before breakfast. The gangway opens at a time printed the night before, and there is a second time on your card by which you have to be back aboard. Somewhere between the gangway and the first taxi rank, a handset that showed nothing over the water finds an island network and spends a minute catching up.

That minute marks the boundary between two unrelated kinds of connection. A Caribbean eSIM is a mobile-data product that runs on ordinary land networks in the islands its own list names. On a port day it behaves the way it would on any other holiday. In open water there is no land network within range, so it has nothing to work with, and no eSIM sold anywhere changes that.

What people usually mean by "the ship has internet" is something else: a satellite service the cruise line buys, installs and resells as an onboard package. It carries its own terms and limits, and nothing you buy for the islands affects them. So the honest way to plan a sailing is to buy for the hours ashore and treat the sea days as a separate decision, taken with the cruise line.

The ship and the island are two different places

Land networks do reach some way offshore. How far is not a fixed figure — it turns on the transmitter, the ground behind it, the weather and where the ship is sitting — but the reach is measured in miles, not hours of sailing. A ship letting go its lines at five in the afternoon is usually well beyond all of it by dinner.

From that point the ship is its own small island, and everything arriving in a cabin has been up to a satellite and back down again. That is why onboard access tends to be sold by the day rather than by the gigabyte. None of this is a defect in a travel plan: it is a different piece of infrastructure, owned by somebody else and paid for separately.

Why a phone still shows bars in open water

Here is the part that catches people out, and it has nothing to do with an eSIM. Many ships run a small onboard cellular service so handsets keep showing signal at sea. It is not the island network from this morning and it is not the ship's Wi-Fi. It is a third thing, and a home line left switched on will use it without asking.

The home operator then applies its own maritime terms to whatever happened there — a call, a message, or nothing more than a mail app checking in the background. That is where the unfamiliar line items on a post-cruise bill come from: ordinary charges for a network the phone genuinely used, the unwelcome part being only that the tower had quietly gone to sea with you.

Airplane mode is a habit, not a setting

The remedy is behavioural and takes about four seconds. As the ship pulls away from the pier, put the handset into airplane mode. If you have bought the onboard package, switch Wi-Fi back on by hand — airplane mode permits that, and the two settings sit together happily. Shipboard Wi-Fi carries on; the cellular side stays quiet until the next port.

Do it at the same moment every day and it stops being a decision. Sail-away is the cue: last lines off, phone into airplane mode. Coming the other way, leave it in place until you are walking down the gangway — which also spares you a handset hunting for something it cannot hold from mid-harbour.

The hours ashore are the hours that need data

A port call is short and tightly scheduled, which makes it unusually dependent on small, urgent lookups. In practice an allowance goes on:

  • Meeting points — the pier gate, the tender dock, the numbered bay where a booked excursion gathers.
  • Getting out and back — a walking route from the terminal, a taxi fare agreed before you get in, a bus that runs twice a day.
  • Vouchers and confirmations — the booking a dive shop or a catamaran crew wants to see, produced at the counter rather than hunted for.
  • Photographs and messages — the evening's traffic, most of which can wait for the ship's package if you have bought one.
  • The clock — working out how long the walk back really takes once the queue at the gate is longer than you allowed for.
Tip: Ships often keep their own time, and it does not always match the island's. A handset that takes its time from the network will show island time as soon as it finds a local signal, while the all-aboard time on your card is ship's time. Note both on the first morning and set the alarm against the ship's clock, not whatever the lock screen says.

Which islands the current list holds

Coverage on a regional plan is a list of named places, never a claim about a sea. Grouped the way itineraries run, today's list falls out like this. Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic are as often embarkation points as calls. The short northern loops reach the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands, and westward lie Jamaica, the Cayman Islands and Curaçao. The eastern chain supplies the remainder: the British Virgin Islands, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Saint Lucia, Barbados, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Two lines doing two different jobs

On a dual-line handset the profiles have separate work, and it saves confusion to settle which is which before you sail. Your usual number lives on the home SIM and goes on receiving calls there, while its mobile data can stay dark all week. The travel profile takes the data assignment and earns its keep only on land.

Tethering is not something to assume in either direction: whether a hotspot is available turns on the plan you selected and on the handset itself, so read those terms before promising anybody a working laptop in the cabin. Sizing a plan against a week of port calls

One plain sentence covers most sailings: a seven-night northern loop calling at Nassau, Grand Turk, Puerto Plata and San Juan, spent on maps, messaging and the occasional booking, usually sits inside 3 to 5 GB, because sea days spend almost nothing. The regional listing runs from 1 GB up to 10 GB, over windows of 7 or 30 days.

The window deserves as much thought as the allowance. Lay a seven-day window over an eight-night sailing and the shortfall lands on disembarkation day, the worst morning of the week for it. Before you sail

Two things have to happen at home, on a connection you trust. Establish that the handset accepts an eSIM and is not tied to a home operator, because that is the single problem a pier-side café cannot solve. Then install, storing the activation code anywhere except the device it is destined for, and leave the new profile idle until the first gangway.

The rest is paperwork. Keep the ship's emergency contact details written somewhere that does not need charging: a data plan is a convenience, not a safety system.
