Check the SIM you already have
Russian-speaking travellers may use a SIM from Ukraine, an EU country or another market. Language does not determine roaming entitlement. Start in your operator's account: check the countries, roaming-data allowance, fair-use rules and any extra charges for your actual tariff.
Ukraine entered the EU's roaming area on 1 January 2026. A traveller with an eligible Ukrainian service may therefore already have useful roaming for an EU-only trip. The Council of the EU explains the change. Read your operator's actual allowance and fair-use conditions; do not buy a second package only because the trip is international.
A travel eSIM is worth comparing when you need extra data, your original tariff does not suit the route or you want a separate travel-data line. None of those situations proves that it will be cheaper without comparing current prices.
Build a list of countries, not a map labelled Europe
Write down every overnight stop and transit country where you need internet. The EU roaming area, geographical Europe and a provider's “Europe” package are different things. Check the United Kingdom, Switzerland and non-EU Balkan stops explicitly in both your existing tariff and any travel package.
A Berlin–Prague–Vienna itinerary should be checked against those three countries. A journey that adds Montenegro or Albania needs its own coverage check rather than assuming the same rules continue south. The Europe catalogue and Balkans catalogue show their current product boundaries. A place included in one is not automatically included in the other.

For a trip based mainly in Germany, also compare a Germany country plan. For several included stops, a regional package can keep one profile and one allowance to monitor. Match the period to the entire journey, including the final travel day.

Three questions that avoid an unnecessary purchase
- Does your current operator already include enough roaming data for every stop? If so, that may be all you need.
- Is the gap extra data in one country, or coverage across several countries? Compare a country package with a matching regional option.
- Do you need hotspot for a laptop or frequent video meetings? Verify the package and device conditions and allow for that usage.
These questions work for a short holiday, visits to friends and travel between places where you live. They also keep citizenship separate from the SIM's actual contract.
Set up two lines without confusing them
Install the eSIM through reliable Wi-Fi using the installation instructions. Check the package's activation rule before enabling the travel line. Current Horizon Europe packages begin their validity at the first successful connection to a supported network in an included destination, without a separate manual activation step.
Choose Horizon for mobile data and configure roaming as instructed. If you want to prevent the original line from using data, disable its data roaming and automatic data switching. Keeping that SIM for ordinary calls or SMS does not make those services free: your operator's terms still apply.
At a border, leave the profile installed and let the phone find a supported network. If the next country is not in the package, changing settings cannot add it. Prepare the appropriate package or offline information before arriving.
Frequently asked questions
Do Ukrainian travellers always need an extra eSIM in the EU?
No. Check the existing Ukrainian tariff first in light of the EU roaming integration. Available data, fair-use conditions and the specific route determine whether extra coverage is useful.
Does “Europe” always include the UK and Switzerland?
No universal product definition exists. Check them by name in the selected package and separately in your original operator's roaming conditions.
Can I keep my WhatsApp number?
You can generally keep the existing app account while selecting another line for data. A data-only eSIM does not replace SMS verification or provide an ordinary local phone number.
Will data reset at each border?
A shared regional allowance remains one balance unless the package states otherwise. Borders do not automatically add gigabytes or extend validity.
What should I save offline?
Tickets, the address of the next accommodation, your route and support instructions. They should remain accessible during a handoff between networks or a local outage.
