Check coverage for your actual route
A country name on a plan identifies its listed territory. It does not promise reception along every road or inside every building. Service depends on the selected plan, device, local network, terrain and exact location.
For city stays, save your accommodation address and arrival transfer details. Before a South Island drive, download the next route and booking confirmations while you have reliable Wi-Fi. Mountain roads, fiords and remote stretches need offline preparation, regardless of how many gigabytes you buy.

Prepare before arriving in Auckland
Check eSIM compatibility for your exact phone model and whether it is carrier-unlocked. Read the selected plan's installation instructions, validity-start rule and any first-use deadline before adding the profile. Install on reliable Wi-Fi when those instructions permit.
Keep the order reference, setup instructions and first transfer details available offline. Installation and local network registration are separate steps; do not rely on an airport connection for essential arrival information. The installation guide explains the device steps.
During troubleshooting, keep the eSIM profile installed and contact support before removing it. An installation code may not be reusable.
Match data and validity to the trip
Use a recent period in your phone's mobile-data counter as a starting point. Think about what will change while travelling:
- Maps, messages and bookings throughout the day.
- Photo uploads, video calls and social feeds away from Wi-Fi.
- Streaming, cloud backups or another device sharing your connection.
Move predictable downloads to Wi-Fi and allow for the tasks you will still do on mobile data. Then choose an allowance and a validity period that cover your own itinerary, including arrival and departure. A longer validity period does not mean more data.

Decide how to use your usual number
Some phones can keep the home SIM active alongside a travel eSIM. Check your device's settings and your home carrier's charges for calls, messages, voicemail and roaming. Receiving a verification code is subject to that line's service; it is not supplied by a data-only travel plan.

Hotspot sharing is free on every Horizon plan. Shared devices consume the same allowance, and a working hotspot still depends on local service.
