In Seoul the station name is rarely the end of the directions. You come up out of a large interchange and the address narrows: one numbered exit out of many, on one side of a road wide enough that choosing wrong means walking back under it. Getting to the right station is the easy half. The last hundred metres is a number, and the number is on your phone.
That is worth settling before you buy data, because South Korea sits far outside every European roaming zone. Whatever travel allowance came with a home plan stops well short of Seoul, and the home operator applies its own terms for a Korean network instead.
The ordinary fix is a travel eSIM — data only, loaded at home while the Wi-Fi is still yours, sitting beside the SIM you already use. That first SIM goes on carrying your own number. The last hundred metres is a number
A Seoul interchange is built to be read in stages. The line, the direction, the fare or payment method, the transfer and the exit number are five separate details, and the station name settles exactly one of them.
What makes this a data question rather than a navigation one is timing. These are small lookups wanted at a precise moment, usually while you are moving and often below ground, where deep stations, crowded platforms and tunnels may interrupt access. The useful habit is therefore not more data but earlier data: pull the exit, the platform and the door address while the accommodation's connection is still doing the work, and let the plan carry the rest.
Which Incheon terminal your booking says
Incheon Airport is not a single transport hall. Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 keep separate transport areas, and the first thing to settle is which one your flight uses — that sits on the booking, not on the signage you will read later. The shuttle between terminals moves you between airport buildings; it is not transport into Seoul.
From there, the way into the city is a separate decision: the airport rail line, an airport bus, or a taxi matched to the district and the final address. Each has its own signs and destination logic, and the platform, stop or rank can change. Follow the current signage, and have the terminal map, the ticket and the accommodation address saved before you go down into the basement transport centre. One operator, one badge, and the rest is geography
Horizon's South Korea listing names a single network: SK Telecom South Korea. That is the operator the profile is arranged around, and the specific thing to compare between products.
On the destination page that entry carries a 5G badge, and the same row records LTE support. Which of the two a handset settles on at any moment is a question of the device, the bands it supports and the spot you are in; reception may vary with terrain and local conditions.
The distinction matters because Korea puts much of ordinary life where a flat map shows nothing: rail through tunnel, shopping and transfers below ground, a mountainous middle on Jeju. Read the listed network as what the plan is built around, and any gap as the ground rather than a fault in the product.
Busan arrives in two different places
Busan has two arrival patterns and they begin in different parts of the city. A KTX passenger arrives at the railway station and continues by metro, bus or taxi. Somebody flying into Gimhae follows the signs from whichever terminal they landed at to Airport Station, takes the light rail, then makes a local connection.
These are not two versions of one journey. They are two different first hours, with different transfer points and a different last step to the door, so decide which applies before the trip rather than in the concourse. KTX runs through tunnel and the terrain is coastal and steep in places, reason enough to have the station-to-hotel route and the return booking saved rather than looked up on the move.
The Jeju day comes apart into stages
Jeju is where treating an island as one connected place does the most damage. The itinerary is a chain of handoffs: the domestic flight, then the airport bus or rental-car collection, then the accommodation entrance, then a coastal site or trail meeting point, and finally the return. Each stage carries its own operating details and access rules, and confirming them one at a time is what keeps a Jeju day from stalling.
Reception can vary on rural roads, mountain routes, trails and exposed coast — the island rather than the plan. Download the drive or bus route, the lodging instructions and the booking references before you leave. Mobile data is a convenience on a trail, not an emergency service or a navigation guarantee.
Five things the allowance is actually spent on
Korean days are not heavy on data so much as heavy on short, urgent lookups. In practice the allowance goes on:
- Transit detail — the line, the direction and the numbered exit for each Seoul interchange, plus the transfer point in from Incheon.
- Signs and addresses — a menu, a street sign or a building number not in the alphabet you read fastest.
- Bookings at the door — a KTX reservation, a Jeju rental confirmation or a lodging instruction, produced at the moment somebody asks.
- Messages and photographs — the evening traffic, most of which lands on the accommodation's connection anyway.
- Live transport — checking whether the airport bus at the stop is the one you wanted.
Tip: Before you fly, test the account somebody will actually reach you on. A data-only Korean plan can carry app messages and app calls out of its allowance, but it will not hand you a Korean number or ordinary text messages — so a rental desk on Jeju or a driver at Incheon who expects to send a text has no way through. Sort out which app the booking runs on while you can still change it, and keep the hotel, driver and tour contacts written down off the phone.
Picking a step on the ladder
One plain sentence covers most of it: a week of city days on maps, messages and the occasional booking sits inside 3 to 5 GB, a fortnight that adds Busan or Jeju is closer to 8 to 10 GB, and anybody streaming or working from the trip should step up. The destination page offers 100 MB, 500 MB and 1 GB over 7 days, 3 GB over 15, and 3, 5, 10 or 50 GB over 30.
The calendar matters as much as the allowance. A 7-day window against a 9-day trip is a mismatch you meet on the final morning. Before you read your first exit sign
Confirm the handset is unlocked and takes an eSIM, because that is the one thing you cannot repair from the departure gate. Load the profile on steady home Wi-Fi and park the QR or manual code somewhere other than the phone it is destined for. Set the Korean profile as the data line and keep the home line's data switching deliberate rather than automatic.
Your own number stays on the home SIM, so calls and texts reach you as they always do. Hotspot sharing depends on the selected plan and on the handset, so check the plan details before counting on a tethered laptop.
If data does not appear at all, the first check is dull and usually right: make sure the Korean profile still holds the mobile-data assignment and the home line has not taken it back. Compare activation, data roaming and network-selection settings against the product's guide, and leave the eSIM installed while you do.
