Neither island has a bridge or a road link. The public ferry leaves from Ceiba, about 65 kilometres east of San Juan — an hour to an hour and a quarter by car — and the crossing itself runs roughly twenty-five to thirty minutes. The alternative is a short flight: seven to eight minutes from Ceiba's José Aponte de la Torre Airport into Vieques. A day trip works for the beaches. Mosquito Bay is paddled after dark, so seeing it means staying the night.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from the first of June to the end of November, and it peaks in late August and September. Averaged over the long run, a tropical storm passes near Puerto Rico about every five years and a hurricane about every seven, so most trips inside that window meet ordinary wet-season weather rather than a storm. Treat it as a flexibility question: keep ferries and flights changeable, and expect rain in the afternoon. December to March is the dry season and the calmest window to plan.

San Juan on its own is comfortable in two or three days, since the walled quarter is walkable and El Yunque is a 40-kilometre day trip east. Adding Ponce, about 120 kilometres and two hours down the PR-52 expressway, pushes it to four or five. Rincón, 150 to 170 kilometres west, deserves an overnight rather than a return drive in one day. A week is the honest figure once Vieques or Culebra joins the plan, because each crossing costs a half day with the drive to Ceiba.

Old San Juan is compact and walkable, and the wider metropolitan area, Condado and Isla Verde included, is manageable without one. Everything else on this page is a drive: Ponce about 120 kilometres on the PR-52 expressway, Rincón 150 to 170 along the PR-22 and PR-2 corridor, and El Yunque roughly 40 east of the capital. Vieques is reached by ferry or small plane rather than by road, so work out separately how you will get around once you are there.

Rincón's season runs from roughly November to March, when the exposed Mona Passage coast takes swells of six to nine metres — the reverse of the calm-winter framing used elsewhere in the Caribbean. Summer is far flatter there. For calm water on the same trip, the north-coast city beaches at Condado and Isla Verde are developed and generally settled, and the sand on Vieques and Culebra, from Red Beach and Blue Beach to the black sand at Playa Negra, sits on clear reef water.

Yes, and it is the usual first outing. El Yunque National Forest is about 40 kilometres east of San Juan, forty-five minutes to an hour by car, and it is the only tropical rainforest in the US Forest Service system. The slopes are steep and often under cloud, the classic terrain for signal shadowing, so download the trail map and the way back before you drive up. The metropolitan beaches sit on the return leg.

Expect it in three settings and prepare for each: under the El Yunque canopy, on the interior mountain roads of the Cordillera Central, and out on the water between Ceiba and Vieques.
