Skopje starts most North Macedonia trips, and it starts them with a timetable worth checking twice. The airport says its shuttle runs to the flight schedule rather than to a fixed clock, so the departure time somebody posted on a forum two years ago is not necessarily the one standing outside the terminal. After that the country opens up quickly: the Stone Bridge and the Old Bazaar a short walk apart in the capital, the road south to Ohrid, boats leaving the lakefront for Kaneo and the coves, Bitola with the ruins of Heraclea Lyncestis on its edge, and — if the trip has a second half — the mountain roads into Mavrovo.
The catch sits at the border rather than in the country. North Macedonia is outside the EU, so the Roam Like At Home rules that make a Vienna-to-Rome trip boring do not reach over this frontier. A home operator applies its own roaming terms here instead, and those terms come from your contract rather than from the map — which is why two people on the same flight can pay very different amounts for the same week. Unglamorous, and mostly about timing:
- The shuttle that follows the flights — checking the current stop and departure before walking out of the arrivals hall, rather than after.
- Boat departures on the lake — times shift with the season and the weather, and the comparing happens while standing on the Ohrid lakefront.
- The right entrance — Heraclea Lyncestis sits on the edge of Bitola, and the way in is not obvious from the road.
- A guesthouse that replies on a messaging app — small places near Širok Sokak, or in Ohrid's old town, often answer there long before they answer a phone call.
- The onward bus — intercity departures are worth confirming the evening before, not at the station at seven in the morning.
Tip: Mavrovo is the stretch where the phone stops being the plan. Mountain terrain interrupts reception between villages and trailheads, which is the landscape rather than the eSIM — download the driving or walking route, the accommodation details and a way back before you leave Ohrid.
How much data a week here actually takes

Keep the number your family dials
