Compare Honduras eSIM plans for Roatán and the Bay Islands, the Copán archaeological site, San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa. Count the island days apart from the road days when you size the data, then read what the offer itself says about validity, territory.
Honduras holds three trips that barely overlap: a reef one on the Bay Islands, a Maya one at Copán, and a mainland one between the two largest cities. Palmerola International Airport is now the primary international gateway; it sits roughly 75 kilometres northwest of Tegucigalpa near Comayagua, an hour to an hour and a half away by shuttle or taxi. The older Toncontín International Airport lies close to the capital and is known for a short runway. San Pedro Sula is served by Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport, about 15 kilometres from the centre and 20 to 30 minutes by taxi, and it is the usual overland gateway to the north coast and to Copán. Between the two cities lie some 336 kilometres of paved highway, four to five hours. Roatán has an airport of its own. Read this country in hours and in departures, not in kilometres.

Set the Honduras profile up at home over Wi-Fi, well before the flight, and keep the order reference on a second device rather than on the phone being prepared. Each offer sets out when the profile takes over as the data line, and that instruction is the one to follow. What comes after landing differs by airport: Palmerola means a 75-kilometre shuttle or taxi run into Tegucigalpa, an hour to an hour and a half, while San Pedro Sula's airport is 15 kilometres out, 20 to 30 minutes. Do the downloading in the city either way — the La Ceiba ferry times, the Copán road, an offline map of the north coast.

As a rule of thumb, a 3–4 day city break runs on about 1–3 GB, a one-week trip on 3–5 GB, a two-week multi-country tour on 8–12 GB, and working on the road takes about 1 GB a day, so 15 GB or more for two weeks.
In total, a 0.098 GB data allowance covers roughly 35 shared photos, 1.6 hours of social media and browsing, 0.3 hours of video calls, 1.2 hours of music streaming, or about 20 hours of maps and navigation. Messaging apps barely use data.
Roatán · City guide
Roatán sits on the Mesoamerican Reef, which is why it is a diving and snorkelling destination. West Bay is white sand, calm and shallow, and the most developed of its beaches; West End is the laid-back village, with snorkelling entry close to shore; Half Moon Bay is a small, calm cove. Getting there means a 30 to 40 minute flight, or a 70-kilometre ferry crossing from La Ceiba of an hour to an hour and a half — open water either way, so load the island map before boarding.
Roatán eSIM — set up before you fly →Copán Ruinas · City guide
Copán Ruinas is a colonial town next to the Copán archaeological site, whose Maya stelae and hieroglyphic stairway are the reason most people make the journey; the Macaw Mountain bird park is nearby. The town lies in rural highland terrain reached by winding roads — roughly 170 kilometres from San Pedro Sula, three to three and a half hours, with sustained curves and elevation change across the mountain pass. Save the route and whatever you want to read about the site before that climb starts.
Copán Ruinas eSIM — set up before you fly →San Pedro Sula · City guide
San Pedro Sula is the main industrial and commercial hub and the usual overland gateway to both the north coast and Copán. Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport lies about 15 kilometres from the centre, 20 to 30 minutes by taxi. Distances begin here rather than end here: 170 kilometres southwest to Copán Ruinas, or about 200 kilometres and three hours northeast to La Ceiba for the Roatán ferry. Both roads leave the lowland and climb, which makes this the sensible place to finish any downloading.
San Pedro Sula eSIM — set up before you fly →Tegucigalpa · City guide
Tegucigalpa is built across hillsides around its colonial centre, and the gradient decides how a day here goes: streets climb and turn, so a walk that looks short on the map is not. Most international traffic now uses Palmerola, roughly 75 kilometres northwest near Comayagua and an hour to an hour and a half out by shuttle or taxi, while short-runway Toncontín sits close to town. The interior highlands stand near 1,000 metres, milder than the coast, with cooler nights.
Tegucigalpa eSIM — set up before you fly →Why Horizon
The decision that sets everything else is whether Copán and the Bay Islands are both in the trip, because they sit at opposite ends of the map with San Pedro Sula as the hinge between them: about 170 kilometres and three to three and a half hours southwest to Copán Ruinas through winding mountain sections, or roughly 200 kilometres and three hours northeast to La Ceiba for the boat. What a handset finds here answers to water, ridge and canopy — the 70-kilometre sea crossing, the sustained climb over the Copán pass, humid lowland jungle behind the north coast — so results may vary with the offer, the device and the precise spot. Check that the territory list names Honduras, and treat the Guatemalan border beyond Copán as where it stops.

The difference is time rather than comfort. Flying from the mainland takes about 30 to 40 minutes. The sea route means driving roughly 200 kilometres to La Ceiba, around three hours, then crossing about 70 kilometres of water in an hour to an hour and a half. Flying suits a short island stay; the ferry suits a trip already working along the north coast. The crossing is open water either way, so whatever you need to read belongs on the phone before boarding.
Copán Ruinas lies inside Honduras, about 170 kilometres from San Pedro Sula, so a plan sold for this country covers the visit to the stelae and the hieroglyphic stairway. The crossing into Guatemala is the part that changes: read the territory wording on the offer and see whether anything beyond Honduras is named there. If nothing is, treat the border as the end of the plan and look instead for an offer that lists every country on the route.
Roatán is the island with an airport of its own, and the beaches usually named with it are West Bay, white sand with shallow, calm water and the most developed of the three; West End, a laid-back village with snorkelling entry close to shore; and Half Moon Bay, a small, calm cove. Utila and Guanaja are the other two Bay Islands. Every hop between them is made by boat, and smaller outlying cays such as Cayos Cochinos are reached only that way, so island-hopping days are days to prepare offline.
Count legs rather than kilometres. San Pedro Sula to Copán Ruinas is 170 kilometres but three to three and a half hours on winding mountain road, and the return is the same again. Roatán is then either a 30 to 40 minute flight or a three-hour drive to La Ceiba followed by a crossing of an hour to an hour and a half. Allowing two nights at Copán and three or four on the island is what makes those transfers worth making.
February to May is the drier stretch, and the months usually named for better underwater visibility. June to December is rainier, and the Bay Islands are often wettest between October and January, because the Caribbean side follows a different rain pattern from the Pacific side of the isthmus. Hurricane season runs from June to November and reaches the Caribbean coast and the islands most directly. The coast stays warm and humid year-round, while Tegucigalpa and the interior highlands near 1,000 metres are milder with cooler nights.
It is the country's main industrial and commercial hub and the usual overland gateway to the north coast and to Copán, which is why most itineraries pass through it. Its airport sits about 15 kilometres from the centre, 20 to 30 minutes by taxi, and both onward roads start here: 170 kilometres southwest to Copán Ruinas, or about 200 kilometres northeast to La Ceiba. It is a lowland city, warm and humid, and it works as a transit point when the schedule is tight.
Over the 70 kilometres of water to Roatán, or on the climb towards Copán Ruinas, there may be nothing for the handset to register on at all, so the honest first step is to wait until you are back in a town rather than to start changing settings. Then confirm the Honduras profile is still the chosen data line and that the offer's own setup notes were followed. If it will not settle, give support the order reference and the exact phone model; repeated reinstalling loses the trail.
