What is a cookie, really?

A cookie is a tiny text file your browser stores when you visit a site. The file holds a key (an ID, a setting) and a value. On your next visit the site reads the file and remembers something about you — that you're signed in, that you put a plan in your cart, that you prefer EUR over USD.
