eSIM 101

An eSIM is a SIM card —
without the plastic.

Embedded in your phone since 2018. Ready to download a data plan in seconds, swap to a different one when you cross a border, and never see a paperclip again.

eSIM at a glance
  • Built into your phone — no physical card and no SIM-tray slot.
  • Standardized by the GSMA; supported on iPhone since the XS (2018) and on most flagship Android phones since.
  • Most phones store 8–10 eSIM profiles and run 2 at once.
  • Activated by scanning a QR code or tapping an install link — usually in under a minute.
  • A data eSIM keeps your everyday number active for calls and texts.

Quick questions

The bits that throw people.

Is an eSIM safer than a regular SIM?

Equally safe in transit. eSIM profiles are encrypted, and because there's no physical card, they can't be stolen, swapped, or popped out by a thief.

Can I use multiple eSIMs at once?

Yes. Most modern phones support 8–10 stored profiles and 2 active simultaneously. Switch between them in Settings.

Does it use the same network as locals?

Exactly the same. Horizon plans roam on a local carrier — speeds and coverage match what residents get.

How do I set up an eSIM?

Buy a plan, then open the QR code or activation link we email you. On iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → scan it. On Android: Settings → Network → SIMs → Add eSIM. It takes about a minute.

Do I keep my phone number?

Yes. A travel eSIM adds a second line for data, so your everyday SIM and number stay active for calls and texts. Set the eSIM as your data line while you travel.

Does an eSIM work in every country?

It works anywhere your plan covers. Horizon has country, regional, and global plans across 190+ countries — pick the one that matches your trip.

What happens if I run out of data?

Nothing breaks — your data just pauses. Top up the same eSIM from your account in seconds, with no new QR code or reinstall.
