It depends on the region, which many first trips overlook. Different seasonal patterns affect the country, so a national average is not enough. The north, including Hanoi, Ha Long and Sapa, is pleasant from October to April and rainy from May to September, with more heat between April and June. The central coast is wetter from September to December and may be affected by tropical storms. The south is hot year-round with a rainy season from May to October. October to April may suit broad itineraries, but check each region's conditions and forecast rather than treating it as a weather guarantee.

Compare flights for the long legs: Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City takes roughly two hours in the air; Hanoi to Da Nang an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half; Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City about an hour and twenty-five. Add airport transfer and check-in time. The railway takes over thirty hours end to end, and Hanoi to Da Nang alone can be a long overnight journey. Sapa requires a direct bus or a train to Lao Cai followed by a separate road transfer. Check the booked service and each stage's duration; air distances do not equal road or rail distances.

Pick one end and stay in it. A week in the north gives Hanoi's Old Quarter, a day or a night on Ha Long Bay 170 kilometres east, and Sapa in the highlands if the days stretch. A week in the south gives Ho Chi Minh City, the Cu Chi Tunnels 70 kilometres northwest, a Mekong Delta day trip and beach time on Phu Quoc. Splitting seven days between the two ends buys two flights and two hotel changes for less of each. Often the season decides it for you.

A fortnight is the honest answer for the full length, because Hanoi, the central coast and Ho Chi Minh City are three separate bases joined by flights or overnight trains rather than short drives. Ten days works if you drop one of them. A week is plenty for one region done properly, north or south, and that is usually the better trip than a rushed traverse. Add two nights on top if Sapa or Phu Quoc goes on the list.

Both work, and the drive decides it. Ha Long Bay is about 170 kilometres east of Hanoi, three to three and a half hours each way by expressway, so a day trip spends six to seven hours on the road for a few hours among the limestone islands. A night on a boat turns that into a mooring in the karst, which is where the bay earns its reputation. Either way the sailing hours are spent on open water, some distance from anything on shore.

Yes — they are roughly thirty minutes apart and one base covers both. Da Nang holds the airport, about three kilometres from the centre, plus My Khe beach and the Marble Mountains. Hoi An holds the Ancient Town, the Japanese Covered Bridge and the lantern-lit riverside, with An Bang beach nearby and the Cham sanctuary at My Son some 40 kilometres away. Most visitors sleep in Hoi An and treat Da Nang as the arrival point and a beach day.

Sapa deserves at least two nights because reaching it from Hanoi and returning require separate travel time. Roads climb in switchbacks below Fansipan and around deep valleys, and reception may vary with terrain, network and device; location alone does not establish that terrain is the cause or rule out a setup problem. Keep the route, meeting point and return offline, and check again when stopped in a location covered by the offer where service is available.
