How much data do you need for a Thailand trip?
باقات تايلاند الشائعة

For one week in Thailand, 3–5 GB is enough for a light routine of maps, messages, ride bookings and occasional browsing. Choose 5–10 GB for typical daily travel use with photo uploads and some video calls. Pick 15 GB or more if you stream, work online or share the connection as a hotspot.

For a common two-week trip, plan around 5–8 GB for light use, 10–15 GB for typical use and 20 GB+ for heavy use. A few hours of video or laptop tethering can outweigh days of maps and messages.

The quick answer by trip length

  • Three or four days: 2–3 GB light, 5 GB typical.
  • Seven days: 3–5 GB light, 5–10 GB typical, 15 GB+ heavy.
  • Ten to fourteen days: 5–8 GB light, 10–15 GB typical, 20 GB+ heavy.
  • Three weeks, remote work or a shared line: start around 20 GB, then confirm hotspot and top-up support on the selected plan.

Validity still matters. Make sure the plan covers every day from the first intended connection through the trip home.

What uses data in Thailand

Most phone tasks are efficient: maps in Bangkok, a ride booking, a ferry confirmation, translation, messages and restaurant searches. Data disappears faster through social-video autoplay, cloud photo and video backup, long calls home, streaming in transit and a laptop using the phone as its internet connection.

In Bangkok, frequent short checks mix with regular Wi-Fi stops. In the north or islands, navigation, bookings and photo uploads happen on the move. For remote work, video meetings and hotspot use dominate.

On a boat or remote beach, more gigabytes do not create coverage. Keep tickets and the next route offline.

Estimate from your real usage

Before buying, open the mobile-data statistics on your phone and examine a recent normal week:

  1. Remove large downloads you will do on Wi-Fi.
  2. Add the travel habits you expect: all-day navigation, daily uploads and calls home.
  3. Add roughly 20% headroom.
  4. Compare the result with the plan sizes and their validity.

If your counter covers several months, reset it and measure for a week. After arriving, check again at the end of day two and compare that pace with the days left.

Download first, spend data on live information

Use Wi-Fi before departure to download the heavy, predictable items:

  • Bangkok and the island or northern areas you need in Google Maps.
  • Thai in your translation app, where offline language files are available.
  • Music, films, airline apps, tickets and insurance documents.
  • Hotel addresses and ferry confirmations as screenshots.

Google's official instructions cover offline map downloads and offline translation languages. Offline maps have limits—walking, public-transport and live-traffic information may still need a connection—so keep mobile data for the current parts of the trip.

Pause mobile cloud backup and video autoplay as well. On iPhone, Low Data Mode reduces background use, automatic downloads and backups.

Choose a Thailand plan without overbuying

The Thailand eSIM page shows the live allowances and validity periods available now. Match the trip to both numbers. Read the selected plan for its activation timing, hotspot terms and top-up availability; those details are not universal eSIM features.

Install on stable Wi-Fi when the plan's instructions allow it and keep the QR or manual details private and available offline. See how to install an eSIM for the device steps, Thailand roaming and eSIM setup for the broader guide, or island hopping in Thailand for route-specific preparation.

Bottom line

For one week in Thailand, use 3–5 GB as a light budget, 5–10 GB as a typical budget and 15 GB+ as a heavy budget. For two weeks, plan on 5–8 GB, 10–15 GB or 20 GB+. Download predictable content on Wi-Fi, measure the first two days, and buy a Thailand eSIM whose validity covers the whole holiday.
