Cambodia pulls a trip in two directions. Siem Reap is the base for the Angkor Archaeological Park, where Angkor Wat stands about 5.5 kilometres north of town and Ta Prohm sits roughly 3 kilometres beyond it, so a day of sightseeing is a day of moving between ruins spread through forest. Phnom Penh
Phnom Penh keeps the Royal Palace and the Silver Pagoda, the National Museum and Wat Phnom within a compact central area. Visitors also go to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, known as S-21, inside the city, and to the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek about 15 kilometres outside it. That second one is a drive rather than a walk, usually by tuk-tuk or car, and it is the leg where a map saved offline earns its place.

Siem Reap
Siem Reap is the base for the Angkor Archaeological Park, and the park is why data planning matters at this stop. Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument in the world, is about 5.5 kilometres north of town; Angkor Thom and the multi-face towers of the Bayon lie beyond it, and Ta Prohm roughly 3 kilometres from Angkor Wat. Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport is around 50 kilometres east of town, a transfer of 45 to 60 minutes.

Sihanoukville
Sihanoukville is the south-coast gateway. Sihanouk International Airport is about 20 kilometres southeast of the city centre, according to the airport's transport guidance; transfer time depends on traffic and your destination. Otres Beach is about 7 kilometres from the centre, split between the quieter Otres 1 and the sleeker Otres 2. It is also where the island boats leave. During the open-water crossing, mobile service may be limited or unavailable depending on the chosen plan, device, partner network and exact location, so buy tickets, send messages and download what you need before boarding.

Battambang
Battambang is the usual add-on between the capital and the temples: colonial-era shophouse architecture, the bamboo train and countryside temples, at a slower pace than either Siem Reap or Phnom Penh. Reaching it means a provincial road leg across flat countryside and small towns where infrastructure is thinner than in the capital. Treat that drive as the stretch when a saved map and a downloaded booking do more work than a live search.

Most trips here are two or three stops rather than a lap of the country, so count nights, not kilometres. Phnom Penh to Siem Reap is 319 kilometres and about five hours by road, or roughly 45 minutes on a domestic flight. Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville is 227 kilometres and about four and a half hours, though express buses on the expressway now run it closer to two and a half or three. What reaches the handset varies with the plan, the device, the hour and the ground under you: forest at Angkor, a provincial road, or open sea on the way to Koh Rong. Whichever shape the trip takes, check that Cambodia is named on the plan's destination list before paying.

How many days does Angkor actually need?
Angkor is a landscape, not a building. Angkor Wat stands about 5.5 kilometres north of Siem Reap, Ta Prohm roughly 3 kilometres further, and the park spreads over many square kilometres of forest and ruins. One long day covers Angkor Wat, the Bayon inside Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm. A stay of three days lets you return at different hours and reach temples further out. Park entry is bought as a pass for a set number of days, so pick that length before the first morning.
Is it better to fly or drive between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap?
By road it is 319 kilometres and about five hours, which makes the drive a whole day through flat countryside and small towns. The domestic flight is roughly 45 minutes and buys back an afternoon. A seasonal boat also runs via the Tonlé Sap. If you fly, remember that Siem Reap-Angkor International is around 50 kilometres east of town, so the transfer adds 45 to 60 minutes at the far end.
Can the Angkor temples be walked, or is a tuk-tuk needed?
The main temples are kilometres apart, so nearly everyone hires a tuk-tuk or a car with a driver for the day and walks each site on foot. Angkor Wat alone is about 5.5 kilometres from Siem Reap, and Ta Prohm another 3 or so from Angkor Wat. Long rides between sites, long walks inside them: that is why a driver's number and a phone still holding charge both matter by mid-afternoon.
How long do the Phnom Penh history sites take?
A single full day is the usual answer. The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, or S-21, is inside the city and the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek are about 15 kilometres outside it, so the pair is normally a morning, a drive and an afternoon. Add half a day for the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, the National Museum and Wat Phnom, and the capital is covered before you move on to the temples.
Sihanoukville or the islands — how many nights on each?
Sihanoukville is the mainland gateway, with Otres Beach about 7 kilometres from the centre, and many people give it one night on either side of the boat. The islands are the point: Long Set Beach on Koh Rong for snorkelling, Saracen Bay and Lazy Beach on Koh Rong Samloem for something calmer and more remote. Two or three nights offshore is the common shape. Settle anything that needs data before you board, because the crossing is open sea.
When is the best time to visit Cambodia?
The dry season runs November to April and the rains May to October. November to March is the dependable window — dry, cooler, clear — and also the peak of the tourist season. December and January average around 24°C and can drop to about 16°C at night, while March to June is the hot stretch, averaging up to 35°C. May and October are lush shoulder months with rain that is usually manageable.
Does a Cambodia plan carry on into Vietnam or Thailand?
Not by itself. A plan sold for Cambodia is sold for Cambodia, so a route that crosses into Vietnam or Thailand needs the neighbouring country named on the destination list as well, or a separate plan for that leg. Read the list before the border rather than at it. Worth knowing too: Siem Reap and Sihanoukville have no direct road link — around 550 kilometres via Phnom Penh — so that pair is usually flown.
