Nicaragua puts two of its best-known destinations behind water and bare slope. Augusto C. Sandino International Airport lies about 11 kilometres east of downtown Managua, roughly 20 to 30 minutes by taxi or shuttle, and the paved highways run outward from there: about 45 kilometres to Granada in under an hour, about 90 kilometres to León in an hour and a half. Ometepe Island is the awkward one — roughly 110 kilometres from Granada through Rivas to the pier at San Jorge, then a lake crossing of about an hour on a fixed timetable. The dry season lasts from November to April; the rains fall between May and October and are heaviest in September and October.

The airport sits about 11 kilometres east of downtown, a twenty to thirty minute taxi or shuttle run, and the paved highways to Granada and León both begin here. Ometepe is two volcanoes rising from Lake Nicaragua — Concepción still active, Maderas dormant under cloud forest — and it is reached only by ferry from San Jorge, roughly an hour across to Moyogalpa on a fixed schedule. The springs at Ojo de Agua and the Charco Verde reserve sit a short ride from the landing. The crossing is open water and the Maderas trail is muddy, remote forest, so save the sailing times and an island map before you board.

Granada or León — which colonial city makes the better base?
They suit different trips. Granada is the lake city: colonial streets along Calle La Calzada, boats out to Las Isletas and Mombacho's cloud forest behind it, about 45 kilometres from Managua. How do you reach Ometepe Island, and how dependable is the ferry?

What is volcano boarding on Cerro Negro actually like?
Cerro Negro is a barren cinder cone outside León, and sliding down its loose volcanic slope is what draws most visitors out of the city. The hill carries no vegetation and no shelter, and the ascent is made on foot with the board. Trips are normally sold as guided half-days from León, so ask what the guided trip includes, what is provided on the mountain and when the return to town is scheduled.
Is San Juan del Sur a nightlife town or a family beach?
Both, depending on where you stand. The town itself wraps around a horseshoe bay where the water is comparatively sheltered and swimming is calmer, which suits families and shorter stays. The surf and the late hours concentrate at the breaks nearby, Playa Maderas and Playa Hermosa, which are open beach breaks with real currents rather than shallow, calm-entry water. Sand along this coast is volcanic, grey to tan rather than white.
Rental car, shuttle or local bus for getting around Nicaragua?
The main links are paved and short: Managua to Granada is about 45 kilometres in under an hour, Managua to León about 90 kilometres in an hour and a half. Shuttles and local buses cover those routes, and Ometepe is a ferry rather than a drive, so a car spends the crossing waiting or shipped. A vehicle earns its place mainly on the dirt access tracks out to Popoyo and the northern breaks.
Can a Nicaragua trip continue into Costa Rica at Peñas Blancas, and what if data stops?
Peñas Blancas is the Pacific-side land crossing, and it is where a plan bought for Nicaragua should not be assumed to carry on.
