Compare Nicaragua eSIM plans for Granada on the lake, León beneath Cerro Negro, Ometepe Island and the Pacific surf coast at San Juan del Sur. Set the data against how many of those days are spent on a boat, on a volcanic slope or on a beach access track, then read the offer's own wording on validity, territory.
Nicaragua puts two of its best-known destinations behind water and bare slope. Augusto C. Sandino International Airport lies about 11 kilometres east of downtown Managua, roughly 20 to 30 minutes by taxi or shuttle, and the paved highways run outward from there: about 45 kilometres to Granada in under an hour, about 90 kilometres to León in an hour and a half. Ometepe Island is the awkward one — roughly 110 kilometres from Granada through Rivas to the pier at San Jorge, then a lake crossing of about an hour on a fixed timetable. The dry season lasts from November to April; the rains fall between May and October and are heaviest in September and October.

Install the Nicaragua profile at home over Wi-Fi, a few days before departure, and keep the activation code somewhere other than the handset it is going onto. Every plan spells out when the profile becomes the phone's data line; act on that sentence rather than on habit. The airport run into Managua is short, so the preparation that counts comes later: save the San Jorge sailing times, the Moyogalpa landing and an offline map of Ometepe while you are still on the mainland. Switch the home contract's mobile data off before boarding unless you have deliberately chosen to be charged for it.

As a rule of thumb, a 3–4 day city break runs on about 1–3 GB, a one-week trip on 3–5 GB, a two-week multi-country tour on 8–12 GB, and working on the road takes about 1 GB a day, so 15 GB or more for two weeks.
In total, a 10 GB data allowance covers roughly 3,300 shared photos, 167 hours of social media and browsing, 29 hours of video calls, 125 hours of music streaming, or about 2000 hours of maps and navigation. Messaging apps barely use data.
Managua · City guide
Managua is where the country's roads meet rather than where itineraries linger — a transit and business base, with Laguna de Tiscapa above it and the Malecón running along the lakeshore. The airport sits about 11 kilometres east of downtown, a twenty to thirty minute taxi or shuttle run, and the paved highways to Granada and León both begin here. Lowland heat of 30 to 35 degrees keeps arrivals moving, so a phone here is mostly used for pickups, timetables and the onward leg.
Managua eSIM — set up before you fly →Granada · City guide
Granada holds its colonial grid along Calle La Calzada, and the bell tower of Iglesia La Merced gives the view back across the roofs. Boats run out to Las Isletas, roughly 365 small islands scattered off the shore of Lake Nicaragua, while Mombacho Volcano stands behind the town under cloud forest. Open water and forest canopy are both harder ground for a handset than a street grid, so download the islet routes and the reserve's access details before you set out.
Granada eSIM — set up before you fly →León · City guide
León is about 90 kilometres and an hour and a half from Managua on a paved road, and the UNESCO-listed Basílica de la Asunción anchors the Ruta de las Iglesias circuit through the old centre. Cerro Negro, the barren cinder cone known for volcano boarding, is the usual half-day trip, and Las Peñitas puts the Pacific within reach. That slope is exposed, with nothing built on it, so agree the return time before the truck leaves town.
León eSIM — set up before you fly →Ometepe Island · City guide
Ometepe is two volcanoes rising from Lake Nicaragua — Concepción still active, Maderas dormant under cloud forest — and it is reached only by ferry from San Jorge, roughly an hour across to Moyogalpa on a fixed schedule. The springs at Ojo de Agua and the Charco Verde reserve sit a short ride from the landing. The crossing is open water and the Maderas trail is muddy, remote forest, so save the sailing times and an island map before you board.
Ometepe Island eSIM — set up before you fly →Why Horizon
Start from whether Ometepe is in the trip, because the ferry sets the shape of everything around it. A route of ten to fourteen days is what usually links Managua, Granada, León, the island and the coast at San Juan del Sur, and the leg from León back down to the south normally returns through the capital, two and a half to three hours in all. What a handset manages in Nicaragua is shaped by open lake water on the Moyogalpa crossing, by cloud forest on Maderas and Mombacho, by the bare cinder of Cerro Negro and by the rutted tracks down to Popoyo, so what you get varies with the plan, the device and the exact spot. Confirm the offer's territory wording names Nicaragua, and treat the Peñas Blancas crossing towards Costa Rica as the edge of it.

They suit different trips. Granada is the lake city: colonial streets along Calle La Calzada, boats out to Las Isletas and Mombacho's cloud forest behind it, about 45 kilometres from Managua. León lies roughly 90 kilometres the other way and leans towards volcanoes and the coast, with the Basílica de la Asunción, the Ruta de las Iglesias and Cerro Negro nearby, and Las Peñitas on the Pacific. Granada also sits closer to the Ometepe ferry.
Ometepe is reached only by lake ferry. From Granada the road runs about 110 kilometres through Rivas to the pier at San Jorge, one and a half to two hours, and the crossing to Moyogalpa takes roughly an hour on a fixed schedule. Sailings depend on conditions across an open stretch of Lake Nicaragua, so confirm the day's departures locally, and keep the island map, your return time and the accommodation address saved offline before you board.
Ten to fourteen days is the figure most itineraries land on for a route taking in Managua, Granada, León, Ometepe Island and the Pacific coast at San Juan del Sur. The individual legs are short — Managua to Granada is about 45 kilometres, Managua to León about 90 — but the island adds a road transfer through Rivas and an hour of ferry each way, and León back down to the south coast normally returns through the capital.
Cerro Negro is a barren cinder cone outside León, and sliding down its loose volcanic slope is what draws most visitors out of the city. The hill carries no vegetation and no shelter, and the ascent is made on foot with the board. Trips are normally sold as guided half-days from León, so ask what the guided trip includes, what is provided on the mountain and when the return to town is scheduled.
Both, depending on where you stand. The town itself wraps around a horseshoe bay where the water is comparatively sheltered and swimming is calmer, which suits families and shorter stays. The surf and the late hours concentrate at the breaks nearby, Playa Maderas and Playa Hermosa, which are open beach breaks with real currents rather than shallow, calm-entry water. Sand along this coast is volcanic, grey to tan rather than white.
The main links are paved and short: Managua to Granada is about 45 kilometres in under an hour, Managua to León about 90 kilometres in an hour and a half. Shuttles and local buses cover those routes, and Ometepe is a ferry rather than a drive, so a car spends the crossing waiting or shipped. A vehicle earns its place mainly on the dirt access tracks out to Popoyo and the northern breaks.
Peñas Blancas is the Pacific-side land crossing, and it is where a plan bought for Nicaragua should not be assumed to carry on. Read the offer's territory list before you travel rather than at the barrier. If data goes quiet after the crossing, or out on the Ometepe ferry, restart the handset, check that the travel profile is still chosen as the data line, and make sure data roaming is switched on for it in the settings.
