One eSIM for a Christmas market trip through Germany, Austria, Czechia and Hungary: five providers compared
Popular Europe + UK plans

A Christmas market trip through Munich or Nuremberg, Prague, Vienna and Budapest crosses three borders in a week or ten days. Horizon's Europe eSIM lists Germany, Austria, Czechia and Hungary, and so do the Europe plans from Airalo, Saily, Nomad and Holafly that we checked. For 5 GB that lasts the week, Horizon charged €3.72, against €15.67 at Nomad, €17.49 at Saily and €17.50 at Airalo.

Prices checked 3 November 2026. Every figure is the price each provider's own page showed that day, in euros. Coupons, subscriptions, credits and first-order discounts are left out. Horizon is our own store, so each source is linked for you to check.

Do you need a separate plan for this trip?

All four countries are in the EU. If your phone contract is from an EU or EEA country, or since 1 January 2026 from Ukraine or Moldova, EU roaming rules generally let you use your domestic allowance in each of them, within your operator's fair-use terms. Read that part of your tariff first: you may need nothing extra.

The plans below are for everyone else. With a contract from the UK, Switzerland, Turkey, the United States or Canada, for example, roaming in the EU runs on terms your own operator sets. One Europe plan then lists every country on the route.

Slovakia, for a day in Bratislava from Vienna, was on all five lists as well.

Data for a week of markets, matched

Each cell is the provider's smallest price for that allowance on a plan that lasts at least seven days.

Provider3 GB5 GB10 GB
Horizon€2.30, 30 days€3.72, 30 days€7.27, 30 days
Nomad€10.75, 30 days€15.67, 30 days€20.60, 30 days
Saily€10.99, 30 days€17.49, 30 days€31.99, 30 days
Airalo€10.50, 7 days€17.50, 7 days€24.00, 7 days

Horizon has the lowest figure in every column. Airalo's prices here are for 7-day plans, and its 3 GB plans stop at seven days. For a trip of more than seven days, its next option is 15 days: €18.00 for 5 GB and €26.00 for 10 GB. The Horizon, Nomad and Saily plans in the table last 30 days.

Unlimited data by the day

Horizon's Europe plan sells fixed allowances only. Airalo, Saily and Nomad sell unlimited Europe data for a set number of days as well, and Holafly's Europe plan is unlimited only, which is why it is not in the table above. Each has a daily limit in its terms:

Plan5 days7 days10 daysDaily terms
Saily€16.99€23.99€31.995 GB a day, then up to 1 Mbps
Nomad€17.02Not sold€30.452 GB a day, then 1 Mbps
Airalo€18.00€25.00€32.505 GB a day, then 1 Mbps
Holafly€18.50€25.50€34.90Hotspot sharing up to 1 GB a day

Unlimited suits a week of video calls and streaming on the phone. For a tablet or laptop, read the daily limits first: past them, Saily, Nomad and Airalo cap the speed at 1 Mbps, and Holafly caps what the phone can share.

How much data a market trip uses

A market day is mostly short lookups: the walk between squares, opening times, a rail ticket, a menu in Czech or Hungarian, and photos. Evenings are often on hotel Wi-Fi. As a rough guide, 3 to 5 GB suits a week for most travellers, and 10 GB suits a week with video calls home or clips posted from the stalls. Automatic photo and video backup is the usual reason an allowance runs out early, so set it to Wi-Fi only.

On the busiest evenings thousands of phones share one square, and mobile data may slow down for a while on any network. Save rail tickets in the operator's app or as a file before you reach the station, and download each city's map before you leave the hotel.

More markets on the same plan

Horizon's Europe plan also lists France, Belgium and Denmark, so Colmar, Brussels and Copenhagen can share the same allowance if the trip goes further.

One city, one country

If the whole trip is one city, that country's plan costs less than the Europe plan. Horizon's prices on 3 November, all for 30 days:

Country plan5 GB10 GB
Germany€2.46€4.76
Austria€2.90€5.61
Czechia€2.60€5.01
Hungary€2.68€5.16

Any two of these together cost more than one Europe plan of the same size, so the Europe plan fits as soon as the trip crosses a border.

Hotspot, validity and setup

Hotspot sharing is free on every Horizon plan. Horizon fixed-data plans have no throttling. A tablet or a second phone draws on the same allowance; it does not get one of its own.

Validity does not start until your eSIM first connects to a supported mobile network at your destination. Install it at home over Wi-Fi with the installation guide, then switch the line on at your destination. Check device compatibility first, and that the phone is not locked to your home network.

Horizon's plans are data-only: no local number, calls or SMS. Turn on data roaming for the Horizon line only. Your home carrier may still charge for calls, texts or data on its own line.

Support and refunds

Horizon offers 24/7 human support in all languages, with guaranteed instant replies. Contact support with setup or plan questions.

We always refund the full amount you paid when you request it, whether your eSIM is unused, partly used or fully used. There is no time limit for requesting a refund. The refund policy explains how a refund is returned.

How we checked

On 3 November 2026 we opened each provider's Europe page from a Kosovo connection and recorded the prices shown. Airalo, Saily and Holafly displayed euros. Nomad's page displayed US dollars by default; the euro figures here are the ones its own currency menu showed. Nomad also sells a second, more expensive Europe plan with a different list: it adds Turkey, Serbia and Monaco and leaves out Poland and Gibraltar. The tables use the plan Nomad shows first.

Horizon's figures are its regular prices on the Europe plan page and its country plan pages, with promotions left out. Prices change, so check the current total on each site before you buy.
