“The eSIM worked perfectly during my trip around Europe. It was very easy to install, connected as soon as I arrived, and the internet was fast and reliable everywhere I went. It made travelling much easier because I did not need to buy local SIM cards. Very convenient and worth the price. I would definitely use it again.”

Liechtenstein eSIM for Vaduz, the Rhine valley and Malbun

Compare Liechtenstein eSIM plans for Vaduz and its museums, the rail and bus hub at Schaan, the Walser village of Triesenberg and the mountain resort of Malbun. Most visits are one stop on a Swiss or Austrian route, so check which countries the offer names before you buy.

Liechtenstein is one of the smallest countries in Europe, about 160 square kilometres of Rhine valley and Alpine slopes between Switzerland and Austria, divided into 11 municipalities. It has no airport: most visitors fly into Zurich, take a Swiss train to Sargans or Buchs and cross the Rhine by bus, while some trains on the line between Feldkirch and Buchs stop in Schaan. The country shares the Swiss franc and an open border with Switzerland, and it belongs to the European Economic Area and the Schengen Area. A single day out can easily touch three countries.

How eSIM works in Liechtenstein

Install the Liechtenstein profile at home over Wi-Fi and keep the order details somewhere other than the phone. If you are arriving through Zurich or from Austria, the first part of the journey is in another country, so either arrange data for it or keep the Liechtenstein line off until you cross into the principality. Then switch the travel line on, set it for mobile data and turn on data roaming for that line. Installing the profile does not start the validity period; it starts when the eSIM first connects to a supported network in Liechtenstein. Save bus times and hiking routes offline before heading into the mountains.

  1. Buy a plan

Pick a destination, data allowance and validity period.

  2. Install your eSIM

Scan the QR or auto-install in the app — no physical SIM.

  3. Land & connect

Data activates on first connection at your destination.

Size it to your trip

Pick the profile closest to your trip. The estimate assumes normal use — maps, messaging, photos, a short call home.

As a rule of thumb, a 3–4 day city break runs on about 1–3 GB, a one-week trip on 3–5 GB, a two-week multi-country tour on 8–12 GB, and working on the road takes about 1 GB a day, so 15 GB or more for two weeks.

In total, a 3 GB data allowance covers roughly 1,000 shared photos, 50 hours of social media and browsing, 8.8 hours of video calls, 38 hours of music streaming, or about 600 hours of maps and navigation. Messaging apps barely use data.

Important cities in Liechtenstein

Vaduz · City guide

Vaduz

Vaduz is a small capital centred on a pedestrian street, the Städtle, where the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, the Liechtenstein National Museum and the Postal Museum sit within a few minutes' walk of each other. Vaduz Castle, high on the slope above, is the residence of the Prince and is not open to visitors, though a footpath climbs to a viewpoint near it. West of the centre, an old wooden covered bridge crosses the Rhine to Sevelen in Switzerland, which means a short stroll can take you out of the plan's territory.

Why Horizon

Choose for three countries, not one

Few people visit Liechtenstein on its own. A day from Zurich or St. Gallen, a stop on a drive between Switzerland and Austria, or a hiking week based in Malbun all cross a border in minutes, often without anyone noticing. Count the days you will actually spend in Liechtenstein, then read the destination list on the offer and decide whether Switzerland and Austria need separate plans or an offer that names all three. Because Liechtenstein is in the EEA, check how your own home contract treats it, too.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Liechtenstein plan cover Switzerland or Austria?

Only if the offer names them. Liechtenstein, Switzerland and Austria are separate territories, and a plan written for Liechtenstein covers Liechtenstein, even though the borders are open and you can walk across the Rhine to Switzerland in minutes. For a trip that moves between all three, either choose an offer whose destination list names every country on the route, or carry a separate plan for each one. Read the list before the day trip rather than at the border.

How do I get to Liechtenstein without an airport?

Most visitors fly into Zurich, take a Swiss train to Sargans or Buchs, and continue by bus across the Rhine to Vaduz or Schaan. From Austria, some trains from Feldkirch stop in Schaan on their way to Buchs, and buses also run from Feldkirch. Driving is easy, with no border checks on the Swiss side. Check the current connections, and save the route and the bus stop for your accommodation before you leave the airport.

Can I visit Vaduz Castle?

Not inside. Vaduz Castle is the home of the Prince of Liechtenstein and his family, so it is closed to the public. A footpath climbs from the town centre towards it and gives good views over Vaduz and the Rhine valley. The main exception is the national holiday on 15 August, when celebrations are held in Vaduz and the castle grounds play a part. For history and art, the National Museum and the Kunstmuseum in the town centre are open to visitors instead.

How much time does Liechtenstein need?

A day covers Vaduz, its museums and a drive or bus ride up to Triesenberg for the view. Two or three days allow time for Malbun, a section of the Liechtenstein Trail and the castle ruins at Schellenberg or Gutenberg Castle above Balzers. Hiking or skiing holidays based in Malbun last longer. Because the country is small, many people stay in Switzerland or Austria and visit for the day, which turns the border into a daily question for the data plan.

Does an EU or EEA home contract include Liechtenstein?

Often, but check. Liechtenstein belongs to the European Economic Area, so many EU and EEA contracts include it in their roaming zone, while Switzerland next door is usually treated separately under different terms. Contracts from outside Europe vary widely. Look up your provider's current terms for both countries before travelling. If you use a travel eSIM for data, keep the home line's mobile data off so it does not draw data in either country.

Is the Fürstensteig suitable for casual hikers?

It is a well-known route, but it is exposed. The path starts at Gaflei above Triesenberg and runs along steep cliffs with drops beside it, secured by cables in places, so it suits sure-footed hikers with a head for heights and good footwear. Avoid it in rain, ice or poor visibility. The area's other trails include gentler valley walks and stages of the Liechtenstein Trail. Check the forecast, tell someone your route and download the map before you start.

Why does the phone switch networks near the Rhine?

The Rhine valley is narrow, and networks from both sides can reach across the borders, so near the river or the Austrian frontier a handset may pick up a network from a neighbouring country. A plan covers only the territory its offer names. If data stops, check that the travel line is on, selected for mobile data and has data roaming enabled, and look at which network the phone has joined. In the mountains, reception can also fade on slopes and in side valleys, so save routes offline.

Can I keep my WhatsApp and phone number with the Liechtenstein eSIM?

Yes. WhatsApp stays linked to your usual number and runs on the eSIM's data. On a dual-SIM phone, your usual SIM can stay on for ordinary calls and texts. Your home carrier may charge for calls, texts or data on that line, so turn off data roaming there.

Does the Liechtenstein eSIM include calls and texts?

No. Horizon plans are data-only, with no phone number for calls or texts. Use apps such as WhatsApp or FaceTime over the eSIM's data, or keep your usual SIM on for ordinary calls and texts.

Do I need to turn on data roaming for the Liechtenstein eSIM?

Yes. A travel eSIM connects to local networks as a roaming line, so turn on data roaming for the Horizon eSIM when you arrive. The plan is prepaid, so Horizon does not bill you after checkout. Keep data roaming off on your usual SIM to avoid charges from your home carrier.

What happens if I run out of data on the Liechtenstein eSIM?

You can buy more. If your plan supports a top-up, My eSIMs shows the data you can add to the same eSIM. If it does not, buy another Liechtenstein plan and install it the same way.

Will my phone work with the Liechtenstein eSIM?

It will if your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to your home carrier. Many recent iPhone and Android models do, but some regional versions do not, so check your exact model on the supported devices page before you buy.

See supported devices
Will Horizon slow down my data?

No. Horizon fixed-data plans have no throttling. There is no daily limit that slows you down, so you can use your whole plan in one day if you need to. Your speed depends on the local network, your signal and how busy the network is. When your data allowance is used up, the plan stops rather than slowing down.

Can I get a refund if I already used some data?

Yes. We always refund the full amount you paid when you request it, whether your eSIM is unused, partly used or fully used. There is no time limit for requesting a refund.
