It can, but most itineraries stop overnight in Goris instead. Yerevan to the Halidzor tramway station is about 250 kilometres and four and a half to five hours each way, which leaves a long day even before the crossing itself. The Wings of Tatev tramway spans the Vorotan gorge in roughly twelve minutes across 5.7 kilometres, and the road alternative takes about forty minutes of serpentine down and up. Save the tramway times and the return leg before leaving the main road.

A week is the usual shape and covers Yerevan with the northern circuits plus one push south. The pattern is a base in the capital and day trips out: Garni and Geghard in one, Sevanavank and Dilijan in another, Khor Virap and Noravank in a third. Tatev is the exception that breaks the day-trip model at about 250 kilometres. Because almost every sight is outside the city, more days buy more mountain roads rather than more Yerevan.

Both work, and the choice usually comes down to the mountain roads rather than the sights. Organised day tours and hired drivers cover the standard circuits comfortably, and shared minibuses run the main routes. A car gives freedom on the southern drive and the side valleys, but that is also where the roads are most demanding and where winter conditions bite hardest. If the itinerary is Yerevan plus the northern circuits, a driver is simpler; if it reaches deep into Syunik, decide with the season in front of you.

May to June and September to October are the best overall — mild, green or golden, and thinner than high summer. July and August are hot in Yerevan and the Ararat valley but pleasant at Sevan's altitude and in the mountains. Winter runs December to February and is snowy at altitude: high passes such as Vardenyats can be blocked or closed, and roads in Syunik and the north are slower or occasionally shut. Passes generally clear by mid-May, so check conditions before any mountain drive outside summer.

It is landlocked, and Lake Sevan stands in for a coast. At about 1,900 metres it is one of the largest high-altitude freshwater lakes in the world, with pebbly and sandy shores, summer swimming and lakeside cafés and guesthouses. The northern shore has the gentler entry into the water and more facilities. Sevanavank Monastery sits on the peninsula above it, so a swimming day and a monastery day are the same day here, which is a useful thing to know when planning the week.

Georgia is the common pairing, with Tbilisi and Yerevan frequently combined on one trip and a functioning land route between them; Iran is the other land route into the country. The land borders with Turkey and Azerbaijan are not open as travel routes, so Turkey is reached by air instead. Border status and crossing rules change, so confirm them from official sources close to the date. Whichever applies, look for each country by name on the plan's own destination list rather than relying on a regional heading.

Your location alone does not establish the cause. The route to the basalt columns near Garni descends into a steep river gorge, the road to Dilijan passes through a mountain tunnel, and the Tatev tramway crosses the Vorotan gorge.
