As of October 2026, Horizon's Ghana eSIM plans name one partner network, MTN, with 3G/4G where available. The page lists two plans: 1 GB for 7 days and 3 GB for 15 days. The eSIM is a data-only line next to your own SIM: install it at home over Wi-Fi and switch it on once you are in Ghana.
This guide covers the network, the two plans and how to make them last, the setup, the arrival at Kotoka and the trips beyond Accra.
The network the Ghana plans name
Horizon's Ghana page names MTN as the partner network, listed with 3G/4G where available. It is not listed with 5G. A badge describes what the network supports, not what a market street in Kumasi, a beach near Cape Coast or a road north will give you; which generation your phone shows depends on the device, the location and local conditions. Reception may vary by area.
The Ghana data plans
As of October 2026, the page lists these plans:
| Data | Validity |
|---|---|
| 1 GB | 7 days |
| 3 GB | 15 days |
Current prices are on the destination page, because they follow the live catalogue.
A short Accra stay of messages, maps and ride bookings fits the 1 GB plan for 7 days, especially if you have Wi-Fi where you sleep. Two weeks with family, or a route out to Cape Coast and Kumasi, points to the 3 GB plan for 15 days. Evenings of video calls home and photo uploads use the most data, so save them for Wi-Fi when you can. For a longer family visit, a top-up adds a plan to the eSIM already on your phone, so there is no new QR code to scan; the top-up page explains how it works.
Set it up before you fly
Check that your phone supports eSIM on the supported devices page, and that it is not locked to your home carrier. Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi with how to install an eSIM, which covers iPhone and Android. Your installation details are in My eSIMs. Name the line, for example "Ghana data", and leave it off until you arrive.
Save the QR code and installation instructions securely, somewhere you can access without this phone. Keep the eSIM installed. If you delete it or change phones, contact support before trying to reinstall; reuse of the QR code is not guaranteed.
Validity does not start until your eSIM first connects to a supported mobile network at your destination. Installing the eSIM does not start its validity.
Landing at Kotoka
Most international flights arrive at Kotoka International Airport in Accra. Save your host's or hotel's exact address, the pickup contact and an offline map before the flight; in Accra a precise entrance or landmark is more useful than a district name. Once you are in Ghana:
- Turn the Horizon line on.
- Choose it as the line for mobile data.
- Turn on data roaming for the Horizon line only.
- Keep mobile data off on your home SIM, unless you accept your home operator's charges.
Hotspot, calls, mobile money and your own number
Hotspot sharing is free on every Horizon plan. A relative's phone or a laptop on your hotspot draws from the same small allowance, so share it with care.
There is no Ghanaian number on these plans. Mobile-money accounts are tied to a local SIM and number, so a data-only plan does not give you access to them. Your home SIM can stay in the phone with your usual number; whether it can make calls or receive texts in Ghana, and the cost, is set by your home operator. Banks and airlines often send one-time codes to that number by text.
Beyond Accra
The coast west of Accra holds Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle, heritage sites tied to the history of the transatlantic slave trade, with Kakum National Park and its canopy walkway inland. Kumasi, the Ashanti capital, is a long drive north-west of Accra, and Mole National Park lies far to the north. Long road days and forest parks are where reception is most likely to change, so download maps and save your guide's contact before you set off.
Ghana borders Togo, Burkina Faso and Côte d'Ivoire. A Ghana plan covers Ghana only, so a day across the border into Togo needs its own plan.
Short answers
Which network do the Ghana plans name? MTN, with 3G/4G where available.
Which plans are on sale? As of October 2026, 1 GB for 7 days and 3 GB for 15 days.
Can I use mobile money with the eSIM? No. Mobile-money accounts need a local SIM and number, and the plans are data-only.
Can I install the eSIM before I travel? Yes. Install it at home over Wi-Fi and keep the line off until you arrive. Installing the eSIM does not start its validity.
What if a family visit lasts longer than 15 days? A top-up adds a plan to the eSIM already on your phone, so there is no new QR code to scan.
