Guatemala eSIM: network, data plans and setup
Popular Guatemala plans

As of October 2026, Horizon's Guatemala eSIM plans name one partner network, Tigo, with 3G/4G where available. The page lists four plans, from 1 GB for 7 days to 25.6 GB for 30 days. The eSIM is data-only and sits beside your own SIM: install it at home over Wi-Fi, then switch the line on when you are in Guatemala.

This guide covers the network, the four plan sizes, the setup, the arrival at La Aurora and what to expect on the volcano trails, the lake and the road to Tikal.

The network the Guatemala plans name

Horizon's Guatemala page names Tigo as the partner network, listed with 3G/4G where available. It is not listed with 5G. A badge tells you what the network supports, not what a highland bend, a lake crossing or a camp below a volcano will give you; which generation your phone shows depends on the device, the location and local conditions. Reception may vary by area.

The Guatemala data plans

As of October 2026, the page lists these plans:

DataValidity
1 GB7 days
3 GB15 days
10 GB30 days
25.6 GB30 days

There is no 10 GB plan for 7 days here, so a short trip with heavy use goes on a 30-day plan. The largest plan holds 25,600 MB, which the page shows as 25.6 GB. Current prices are on the destination page, because they follow the live catalogue.

The classic highland loop of Guatemala City, Antigua and Lake Atitlán is compact, and a week of maps and messages there is a small-plan trip. Adding Tikal, a volcano hike and shuttle days between them stretches a route to ten days or two weeks, with more bookings and more photos to send. For that, compare the 10 GB plan for 30 days with the 15-day plan.

Set it up before you fly

Check that your phone supports eSIM on the supported devices page, and that it is not locked to your home carrier. Then install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi with how to install an eSIM, which has the iPhone and Android steps. Your installation details are in My eSIMs. Give the line a name such as "Guatemala data" and leave it off until you land.

Save the QR code and installation instructions securely, somewhere you can access without this phone. Keep the eSIM installed. If you delete it or change phones, contact support before trying to reinstall; reuse of the QR code is not guaranteed.

Validity does not start until your eSIM first connects to a supported mobile network at your destination. Installing the eSIM does not start its validity.

Landing at La Aurora

La Aurora International Airport is on the southern side of Guatemala City, close to the centre, and Antigua is a shuttle or taxi ride away on a winding mountain road. Once you are in Guatemala:

  1. Turn the Horizon line on.
  2. Choose it as the line for mobile data.
  3. Turn on data roaming for the Horizon line only.
  4. Keep mobile data off on your home SIM, unless you accept your home operator's charges.

Save the shuttle booking, the Antigua address and an offline map of the highland roads before the flight.

Hotspot, calls and your own number

Hotspot sharing is free on every Horizon plan. A laptop or another phone on your hotspot draws from the same data allowance, so count it when you choose.

There is no Guatemalan number on these plans. Your home SIM can stay in the phone with your usual number; whether it can make calls or receive texts in Guatemala, and what that costs, is up to your home operator. Banks and airlines often send one-time codes to that number by text.

Volcanoes, the lake and the jungle

The overnight climb of Acatenango spends the night at a high, exposed camp, and the villages around Lake Atitlán are linked by small boats called lanchas, so both put open ground or open water between you and the nearest mast. Tikal lies in the lowland forest of Petén, far to the north; the flight to Flores saves a long day on the road. Download the trail notes, lancha times and the guide's contact while you are still in town.

Guatemala borders Mexico, Belize, Honduras and El Salvador. A Guatemala plan covers Guatemala only, so a side trip to Copán in Honduras or to the Belize cayes needs its own plan.

Short answers

Which network do the Guatemala plans name? Tigo, with 3G/4G where available.

Can I install the eSIM before I travel? Yes. Install it at home over Wi-Fi and keep the line off until you arrive. Installing the eSIM does not start its validity.

Is there a 10 GB plan for one week? Not as of October 2026. The 10 GB plan lasts 30 days.

Do I get a Guatemalan phone number? No. The plans are data-only, and internet calls and messaging apps use the data allowance.

What if the data runs out? A top-up adds a plan to the eSIM already on your phone, so there is no new QR code to scan. If the data has already run out, buy it over Wi-Fi. The top-up page explains how it works.
