Rome, Florence and Venice by train: prepare the phone as well as the route
Popular Italy plans

For a first independent rail trip through Rome, Florence and Venice, prepare the information around the journey as carefully as the journey itself. Know your departure station, your destination station and how the ticket must be shown. A city name alone is not a complete rail booking.

This is a preparation guide for travellers arranging the route themselves, including visitors from China using translated booking interfaces. It does not replace the conditions attached to your fare. Those conditions determine which train you can board, how changes work and what staff need to see.

Keep the original station names

Store the Italian station name alongside your Chinese translation. Copy it from the booking rather than reconstructing it from a map search. Cities can have several stations, and a hotel described as “near the station” may refer to a different one from your ticket.

For each travel day, make a small note with the departure station, arrival station, train service and accommodation address. Add the reserved carriage and seat when the booking supplies them. Check the departure board at the station for the current platform; a saved itinerary is useful context, not a live platform announcement.

Identify the ticket type before boarding

Trenitalia's regional travel guidance, checked in October 2026, distinguishes the Digital Regional Ticket, Electronic Regional Ticket and paper ticket. The Digital Regional Ticket validates at the scheduled departure and must be displayed with its dynamic green bar. An Electronic Regional Ticket can be presented as its supplied PDF, while ordinary paper regional tickets require validation before departure.

Those are different documents, not interchangeable ways of saving the same image. Read the instructions for your actual purchase, including tickets issued by an agency or another operator. Do not assume a screenshot of a dynamic ticket is sufficient. Keep the required identification available and make any permitted changes before the relevant deadline.

Plan the gap between train and hotel

Before boarding, save the walking route or local connection from the arrival station to your accommodation. Store the street address in Italian and the check-in instructions somewhere you can open without searching through a long chat history.

If you arrive before check-in, ask the accommodation about luggage arrangements in advance. Avoid booking a timed museum entry immediately after a train journey unless you have allowed a buffer. A delay is easier to handle when you know which reservation can move and how to reach the next host.

Keep a useful connection without uploading everything

Use mobile data for current departure information, booking messages and directions after arrival. Download available offline maps in advance, and save large photo or video backups for Wi-Fi. A train moving through tunnels or countryside can lose reception, even when the destination is included in your plan.

Check the current options on the Italy eSIM page. If the route continues into other countries, verify them individually on the chosen Europe plan. The shared allowance and validity should cover the whole itinerary, not just the first city where you spend the night.

Sort out the phone before the first transfer

Confirm the exact phone variant and its sales-region restrictions before purchase. If you use a mainland-bought iPhone, check when a foreign eSIM can be installed; do not assume it can be done at home. Follow the installation guide over reliable Wi-Fi when your device permits it.

At a supported destination, select Horizon for mobile data and enable roaming on that line. Preserve the installed profile and keep installation details secure. If a ticket fails to load, look for assistance from railway staff rather than repeatedly changing SIM settings while boarding. Separating a ticket problem from a connection problem saves a great deal of confusion.
