London at Christmas 2026: Winter Wonderland dates, markets and New Year's Eve
Popular United Kingdom plans

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland opens on Thursday 19 November 2026 and runs until Sunday 3 January 2027, every day except Christmas Day, until 22:00 each evening. Entry is by timed ticket, from £1 off-peak to £8.25 at peak times, and free when you pre-book £25 of rides or food in one online order.

Three more things shape the trip: Transport for London (TfL) usually runs almost no public transport on 25 December, the New Year's Eve fireworks were ticket-only last year, and most visitors now need an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) or a visa. Every 2026 event date below was read on the organiser's or an official website on 1 October 2026; anything not yet published for 2026 is marked as expected, based on last year's pattern.

When does Winter Wonderland 2026 open, and what does it cost?

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland runs from 19 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, every day except 25 December, closing at 22:00 and opening between 10:00 and 14:00 depending on the day, according to the organiser's tickets guide, checked on 1 October 2026.

Opening hours, including Christmas week

Later starts are listed for some weekdays: 12:00 on 19–20, 23–26 and 30 November and 2 December; 14:00 on 1 December; and 11:00 on 27 November, 3–4, 7–11 and 14–18 December, and from 28 December to 1 January. No special hours are listed for 24 or 26 December, and on 1 October the booking calendar showed entry slots from 10:00 on both days, so both run from 10:00 to 22:00. Entry tickets come in one-hour slots from 10:00 to 20:00, last entry is at 21:30, and once inside you can stay until closing.

Tickets and prices

Every visitor needs a ticket ("whether you're 2 or 92", the organiser says), and for 2026 the booking fee is included:

  • Off-peak, £1: green slots, all day Monday to Thursday in November; half a million are available.
  • Standard, £5.50: gold slots, on many mornings and afternoons and all day on some dates.
  • Peak, £8.25: orange slots, mostly later in the day and at weekends.

Entry is free when you pre-book £25 of rides, attractions, packages, passes or meal deals in one online transaction. Advance prices end at 23:59 the day before your visit; tickets bought on the day cost more, and popular slots sell out. Book through See Tickets, the authorised seller.

What is new, and which gate to use

New for 2026, the organiser says, are a Peter Pan theme for the Magical Ice Kingdom and the Gandeys K-Pop Dragon Circus. For the Christmas market stalls, Market Square and the Bavarian Village, use the Green Gate on the west side.

The organiser warns that the closest stations, Hyde Park Corner, Knightsbridge and Marble Arch, get busy and are sometimes closed; Victoria, Bond Street and Paddington are within a 20-minute walk, and it recommends Green Park or Bond Street for step-free access.

Which other Christmas markets, rinks and lights have 2026 dates?

  • Skate Leicester Square: Underbelly's ice rink, which has Christmas market stalls on site, is open from 31 October 2026 to 3 January 2027, every day except Christmas Day (organiser). From 27 November it opens daily 10:00–22:00, except 10:00–18:00 on 24 December and 12:00–22:00 on 26 December and 1 January. The on-site box office takes cards only.
  • Skate at Somerset House: 11 November 2026 to 10 January 2027, closed on 25 December, in the 18th-century courtyard under a 40-foot (12-metre) Christmas tree (Somerset House). On 24 and 31 December the last session starts at 17:00; on 26 December and 1 January the first starts at 12:00. Adult tickets start at £13 and children's at £11, plus a £1.50 fee per ticket. Temple is the nearest station.
  • Covent Garden: the district switches on more than 300,000 Christmas lights on Thursday 12 November 2026, and a British-grown Christmas tree returns to the West Piazza (Covent Garden).

On 1 October, official 2026 dates could not be confirmed for the Southbank Centre Winter Market, Greenwich Market's Christmas trading or the Oxford Street and Regent Street switch-ons, and guides that already print dates disagree. Based on past seasons, expect the markets from early or mid-November into early January.

What runs on 24, 25 and 26 December?

TfL has not published its 2026 Christmas timetable. Its 2025 notice said that, as usual, there would be no service on the majority of public transport on Christmas Day (TfL, 2 December 2025), and the same is expected in 2026. In 2025, according to TfL and Time Out:

  • 24 December 2025: early finishes, with a reduced Tube service after 20:00 and no Elizabeth line after 22:30.
  • 25 December 2025: no Tube, buses, trams, DLR, London Overground or Elizabeth line. Santander Cycles (the public hire bikes), rental e-scooters, taxis, private hire and coaches from Victoria Coach Station still ran.
  • 26 December 2025: a Sunday service on the Tube, buses and trams, with Tube trains from about 07:00, and no Elizabeth line or Night Tube, the all-night weekend service.

Winter Wonderland's 2026 travel page says the Elizabeth line will not run on 26 December.

Getting to and from the airports

Avoid flying in or out on 25 December unless a transfer is booked. In 2025 National Rail ran no trains that day either, IanVisits reported, so the airports could be reached only by taxi, pre-booked car or one of the few coaches. On 26 December 2025 Southern ran a limited service from Victoria via Gatwick, and the Stansted Express ran only between Tottenham Hale and the airport.

Paying for the Tube

Pay as you go with a contactless card or phone, and TfL caps the fare: in 2026, £8.90 a day or £44.70 from Monday to Sunday within Zones 1–2. Heathrow Express journeys do not count towards the cap. Touch in and out with the same card or device, one per traveller.

New Year's Eve 2026/27: do the fireworks need a ticket?

Expect so. In 2025 the Mayor of London's fireworks on the Thames were ticket-only; on 1 October 2026, sale dates and prices for 31 December 2026 had not been announced.

Last year's pattern: about 100,000 tickets, a first release at midday on Friday 17 October 2025 and a final one on Monday 24 November. Londoners paid £20 or £35, depending on the viewing area, and everyone else £40 or £55 (Time Out, 17 October 2025). City Hall has warned about ticket scams: only tickets bought through Ticketmaster were valid for entry.

In 2025 the Tube ran all night, and TfL asked anyone without a ticket to keep away from the Victoria Embankment.

Do you need an ETA or a visa for London?

Most visitors need one of the two, and the passport decides which; GOV.UK's checker gives the answer.

ETA. Nationals of EU countries, the USA, Canada, Australia and some other countries usually need an electronic travel authorisation rather than a visa; on 1 October 2026 the checker gave that answer for German, French, Italian, Spanish, Polish, Croatian, US, Canadian and Australian passports and for all six Gulf states. It costs £20, the price since 8 April 2026, and every traveller needs one, babies and children included. GOV.UK says a decision usually arrives by email within a day but can take up to three working days, and you must wait for that confirmation before you travel. An ETA lasts two years, or until the passport expires if sooner, and the fee is not refundable. Apply on GOV.UK or in the official UK ETA app; other websites may charge more.

Visa. Nationals of countries on the UK's visa national list, last updated on 3 August 2026, need a Standard Visitor visa. The list includes Turkey, Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Albania, Kosovo, Serbia, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq. The visa costs £135 for up to six months. You apply online, then attend an appointment at a visa application centre, and GOV.UK says a decision usually follows within three weeks. The earliest you can apply is three months before you travel, so for a Christmas trip you can apply now.

Do you need a data plan in London?

It depends on where your SIM was issued. The EU's roam like at home rule covers every EU country plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, and since 1 January 2026 Ukraine and Moldova. It has not applied in the UK since Brexit, but some operators have chosen to keep it there, the European Commission says, so in London your operator decides.

Reported UK terms for the main networks follow; they are voluntary and can change at short notice:

CountryUK included, as reportedUK charged, as reportedStatus
GermanyTelekom, Vodafone; O2 until 31 December 2026–Reported July 2026; check your tariff
FranceOrange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom, Free–Reported September 2026; check your tariff
ItalyVodafone, IliadTIM, WindTreReported May 2026; check your tariff
Poland–Orange, Play, PlusReported November 2025 to July 2026; check your tariff
SpainMovistar; Vodafone until 31 March 2027Orange, Yoigo, MásMóvil, PepephoneReported September and October 2026; check your tariff

Orange Polska, as reported in July 2026, has since 10 August 2026 switched on a 1 GB package for 15 zł a day when postpaid customers start using data in the UK; on contracts signed before 20 January 2024 the customer must first turn the service on. If your tariff does include the UK, you may not need a plan at all; check its fair-use allowance for data abroad, as when EU roaming is enough explains.

On a SIM from Turkey, the Gulf, the Western Balkans, Russia, North America or Asia, London is roaming on your operator's own terms. That is who a travel eSIM is for: a separate data line beside your usual number, which stays on for calls and texts at your operator's rates.

Don't rely on Underground Wi-Fi: it covers stations, not tunnels, and runs through UK networks' own Wi-Fi services (TfL names EE, O2, Three and Vodafone). Mobile signal now reaches half the below-ground stations, TfL says. Your own data matters most on 25 December, when getting around depends on walking maps, taxi apps and messages.

For London alone, the United Kingdom eSIM page lists current sizes; a week of maps, tickets, messages and photos usually fits in 5 GB over seven days. If London is one stop on a longer trip, the Europe eSIM lists the UK alongside France, Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic on one plan, so the German, Austrian and Prague markets can share one allowance; it does not cover Turkey, Albania, Kosovo or Serbia. Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi with the installation guide; its validity does not start until the eSIM first connects to a supported network at your destination. Personal hotspot is free on every Horizon plan.
