There is no single rule. A travel eSIM's validity clock can start at three different moments depending on the plan you bought: when you pay for it, when you install the profile, or when the phone first registers on a network at the destination. Installing a profile does not always start the plan. Before you buy, read the package's activation trigger — that one line decides whether a 7-day plan gives you seven days of travel or five.
The three activation triggers
On purchase. The countdown begins at checkout. These are the plans that punish you for buying early. If you buy a 7-day plan a week before departure, it can expire the day you land.
On installation. The clock starts when the eSIM profile is added to the phone, whether or not you are anywhere near the destination. This is the trigger people misjudge most often, because installing at home the night before feels harmless and can quietly spend a travel day.
On first connection. Nothing counts until the phone actually registers on a network at the destination. This is the friendliest of the three, because it lets you install early and calmly, then fly.
Horizon's guidance is deliberately conservative: install with a good wifi connection before you leave, but do not assume installation always starts the plan. Read the selected package to learn its activation trigger and validity period. If the clock does start on activation, switching it on too early may spend travel days before you arrive.
So should I install before I fly?
Yes — installing is the part that needs a working internet connection, and an airport wifi network you have never used before is a bad place to discover a problem. Installing is not the same thing as switching the line on. On most phones you can add the profile and leave it turned off, then enable it for data when you want it.
The sequence that goes wrong least often:
- Install the profile at home, on wifi you trust, a day or two before you travel.
- Leave the new line switched off.
- Check the package details so you know what its clock is tied to.
- Turn the line on and select it for mobile data when you want the plan running.

The destination list is the one people skim. A regional plan's name tells you the marketing region, not the countries in the package. On Horizon's Balkans plan, for example, the package covers Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia — and not Kosovo, which is added to the order as its own eSIM.
What happens when I cross a border?
Leave the eSIM installed and let the phone look for a local network at the next included destination. Registration is not always immediate, and a few minutes of nothing is normal rather than a fault.
If it takes longer than that, check three things in order: that Horizon is still the line selected for mobile data, that data roaming is enabled on that line, and then restart the phone. Manually choosing a network is a last resort, not a first move.
Can I keep my home number working?
If the phone supports two active lines, you can keep the home SIM for calls and texts while selecting Horizon for mobile data. Two things are worth doing at the same time: turn off mobile data on the home line, and turn off data roaming on it as well. Your home operator may still charge for roaming activity, and an app updating in the background on the wrong line is the classic way that bill appears.

Does installing the eSIM use my allowance? No. The profile download is a small file and the plan's data is separate.
Can I install it without a signal at the destination? Yes — install over wifi before you travel. That is the recommended order.
What if I install it and never travel? That depends entirely on the activation trigger. If the plan starts on purchase or installation, the clock runs regardless of where you are.
Can I top up instead of buying again? Top-ups are available on many plans once the eSIM is installed, but support varies by plan — check the plan details rather than assuming.
Does the allowance reset each month? No. A travel plan carries a fixed allowance for a fixed window. When either runs out, the plan is done.
