Sri Lanka eSIM for the tea hills and one coast

Compare Sri Lanka eSIM plans for Colombo and the Cultural Triangle, for the tea hills around Kandy and Ella, and for whichever coast is dry on your dates. Weigh the days against the allowance, then read the territory, the validity and the tethering wording printed on the offer.

Sri Lanka packs a great deal into a small island. Bandaranaike International Airport lies about 32 kilometres north of Colombo, and from there the road south covers 120 to 130 kilometres of flat, open shoreline on the Southern Expressway to Galle, while the road inland climbs 115 kilometres to Kandy and keeps climbing towards Ella. That difference in altitude is what a data decision has to account for: the coast is one long, easy corridor, and the hill country is a maze of tea estates, tunnels and viaducts where the terrain, not the plan, decides what a handset can see. The two coasts also run on opposite calendars, which reshapes the whole itinerary.

How eSIM works in Sri Lanka

Add the Sri Lanka profile at home, over a Wi-Fi connection you already trust, and keep the order details off the handset you are carrying. The plan you buy names the step at which it becomes the data line; follow that wording rather than guessing at it. Arrivals reach Bandaranaike International about 32 kilometres from central Colombo, a 45 to 60 minute drive depending on traffic, with an expressway link and airport coach services also running into the city. That drive is the reason to have a map and the first night's address saved offline. Leave the home contract's mobile data switched off unless being billed for it is a decision you have made.

Size it to your trip

Pick the profile closest to your trip. The estimate assumes normal use — maps, messaging, photos, a short call home.

As a rule of thumb, a 3–4 day city break runs on about 1–3 GB, a one-week trip on 3–5 GB, a two-week multi-country tour on 8–12 GB, and working on the road takes about 1 GB a day, so 15 GB or more for two weeks.

In total, a 5 GB data allowance covers roughly 1,700 shared photos, 83 hours of social media and browsing, 15 hours of video calls, 63 hours of music streaming, or about 1000 hours of maps and navigation. Messaging apps barely use data.

Important cities in Sri Lanka

Colombo · City guide

Colombo

Colombo is the arrival city and the flattest, easiest stretch of the trip. Galle Face Green runs along the sea, the Pettah market lanes sit tight behind the harbour, and the Gangaramaya Temple and the National Museum are short hops across town. Bandaranaike International is about 32 kilometres north, 45 to 60 minutes by taxi depending on traffic, with an expressway link and airport coaches into the city. Nothing here is remote; traffic rather than terrain is what slows a Colombo day down.

Colombo eSIM — set up before you fly

Why Horizon

Buy for the coast that is in season

Most itineraries are a loop: Colombo, the Cultural Triangle around Sigiriya and Dambulla, the tea hills, then a coast. Pick the validity for the number of days that loop really takes, and check that Sri Lanka is named on the plan's own territory list rather than assumed from a regional label. What a handset manages here has less to do with the plan than with where you happen to be standing: the Kandy-to-Ella corridor runs at altitude through cuttings, tunnels and viaducts, wildlife parks reached from the south and east are rural with sparse infrastructure, and the coastal strip between Colombo and Galle is flat and open by comparison. Download what you need before the road starts to climb.

Frequently asked questions

Which coast should I book — the south or the east?

There is no single answer: the two coasts run on opposite calendars. The west and south — Bentota, Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna, Mirissa and Galle — are calm and dry from December to March, then take the Yala monsoon from May to September. The east — Arugam Bay, Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Passikudah — is dry roughly from April or May to September and wet under the Maha monsoon from October to January. April and October are unsettled on both. Whichever coast is dry, the other is wet: choose the coast around the dates.

How long does the full island loop really take?

Distances are relatively short, but travel takes longer. Colombo to Sigiriya is about 160 kilometres and three to three and a half hours by road; Colombo to Kandy is around 115 kilometres and roughly three hours by train, depending on the service. When the full Kandy–Ella railway route operates, allow six to seven hours or more; check the operator for your exact date and stations before planning it. With overnight stops, the capital, Cultural Triangle, hill country and coast take around a week and a half. Drop one part if time is tight.

Is the Kandy to Ella hill train worth planning around?

It is a signature journey rather than a quick one: when the full route operates, allow six to seven hours or more through tea estates, tunnels and viaducts. Keep a road transfer as an alternative. Services have faced disruption since the 2025 cyclone, with sections reopening in stages, so check Sri Lanka Railways notices and the timetable for your exact date and stations before building a day around it.

Mirissa and Unawatuna, or Arugam Bay for the beach week?

Season decides this more than taste does. Mirissa and Unawatuna, on the south coast near Galle, are established swim and surf spots on golden sand, at their calmest from December to March. Arugam Bay on the east coast is a renowned surf break whose peak runs from June to August, inside the eastern dry window of roughly April or May to September. If the dates fall in the northern winter, go south; if they fall mid-year, go east.

Can Sigiriya be done in a day from Dambulla or Kandy?

Sigiriya and Dambulla are commonly combined, so from a base at either the pair works as a single day out: the 5th-century Lion Rock fortress and the cave temples belong to the same Cultural Triangle. From Kandy it is a longer outing, since the Triangle sits north of the hill country and Colombo to Sigiriya alone is about 160 kilometres and three to three and a half hours by road. Start early and let the climb set the shape of the day.

Private driver, train or a domestic flight for getting around?

A private car and driver is the practical norm for a circuit mixing the Cultural Triangle, the hill country and a coast, because the trains are a signature part of Sri Lanka but run slowly. Take the rail for the stretch you actually came to see and use the road for the rest. The geography rarely forces a domestic flight: Colombo to Galle is 120 to 130 kilometres and Colombo to Kandy 115.

Does a Sri Lanka plan cover a few days in the Maldives?

Treat them as two destinations, not one. A Sri Lanka plan is written for Sri Lanka, and a Maldives extension is its own territory, so read the destination list named on the offer rather than assuming an Indian Ocean or South Asia label stretches across the water. If both legs matter, buy for each in turn or look for a plan that names both. The same test applies to any onward hop out of Colombo.
