Antigua and Barbuda eSIM for St John's and English Harbour

Compare Antigua and Barbuda eSIM plans for St John's and its cruise quays, Nelson's Dockyard at English Harbour, the west-coast beaches around Jolly Harbour and a crossing to Barbuda. Size the data to the days spent touring and on the water, then read the territory on the offer.

Antigua and Barbuda is a country of two inhabited islands with very different characters. Antigua, the larger one, holds the capital, the international airport and almost all of the hotels; its coastline is deeply indented, and the tourism slogan of a beach for every day of the year gives a sense of how many coves there are. English Harbour on the south coast keeps a restored Georgian naval dockyard that is now a World Heritage Site. Barbuda lies to the north, flat and thinly populated, and is reached by ferry or small plane. Hurricane Irma devastated it in 2017, and the whole population was evacuated to Antigua at the time.

How eSIM works in Antigua and Barbuda

Add the Antigua and Barbuda profile before the flight, over Wi-Fi you trust, and keep the order details somewhere other than the phone you are about to configure. V. C. Bird International lies on the north-east side of Antigua, a short drive from St John's, so there is little time to sort settings on the way to the hotel. After landing, switch the travel line on, choose it for mobile data and enable data roaming for it. The validity period does not begin at installation: it begins when the eSIM first connects to a supported network in Antigua and Barbuda. Save the Barbuda ferry details and your accommodation address offline before any crossing.

Size it to your trip

Pick the profile closest to your trip. The estimate assumes normal use — maps, messaging, photos, a short call home.

As a rule of thumb, a 3–4 day city break runs on about 1–3 GB, a one-week trip on 3–5 GB, a two-week multi-country tour on 8–12 GB, and working on the road takes about 1 GB a day, so 15 GB or more for two weeks.

In total, a 10 GB data allowance covers roughly 3,300 shared photos, 167 hours of social media and browsing, 29 hours of video calls, 125 hours of music streaming, or about 2000 hours of maps and navigation. Messaging apps barely use data.

Important cities in Antigua and Barbuda

St John's · City guide

St John's

St John's is the capital and the main port, and cruise passengers step ashore at Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay, right beside the shops and restaurants of the old town. The twin towers of St John's Cathedral stand above the centre, the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda occupies the old colonial courthouse, and Fort James guards the mouth of the harbour. On a ship day the streets fill quickly, so arrange any tour pickup point and the time back on board before you step off.

Why Horizon

Plan the beaches, the harbour and the crossing

A beach week on the west coast is light on travel: a hotel, a strip of sand and the occasional drive into St John's. A trip built around English Harbour, Antigua Sailing Week in the spring or a day on Barbuda moves around far more, with boat schedules and road trips across the island. Count the travel days, including the departure day, before choosing the validity, and check that the offer names Antigua and Barbuda. A hop to Montserrat or another neighbouring island is a different territory and needs its own check.

Frequently asked questions

Is Barbuda a day trip from Antigua, or worth an overnight?

Both are possible. The ferry from St John's and the short flights both make a day trip workable, and many visitors combine the frigatebird lagoon with a few hours on the beach. The crossing depends on sea conditions and timetables, though, and an overnight gives time for the sanctuary boat trip and the long western beaches without watching the clock. Whichever you choose, book the return first, then save the guide's contact and the meeting point offline, because services on Barbuda are thinner than on Antigua.

Does Antigua really have 365 beaches?

It is the tourism board's long-running slogan, and the indented coastline does hold an unusually large number of beaches and coves. The useful distinction is between the two coasts. The western, Caribbean side, from Dickenson Bay down to Jolly Harbour and Darkwood Beach, is generally calmer for swimming. The eastern side faces the Atlantic, with places such as Half Moon Bay and Devil's Bridge exposed to swell, so check conditions and flags before going in.

Where should I stay: St John's, English Harbour or the west coast?

St John's is convenient for the airport, the ferry and short stays, but it is a working town rather than a beach base. English Harbour and Falmouth suit sailors and anyone who wants restaurants, the dockyard and Shirley Heights within walking distance or a short drive. The west coast, around Jolly Harbour and the beaches south of it, suits a slower beach holiday. Distances are short on a map, yet the roads are narrow and winding, so add time to any plan that crosses the island.

When is hurricane season in Antigua and Barbuda?

The season runs from 1 June to 30 November, and Hurricane Irma in September 2017 showed what a direct hit can do, leaving Barbuda badly damaged. Winter and spring are the usual high season, with more settled weather and the busiest harbours. A late-summer or autumn trip can still go well, but it carries more weather risk, so choose flexible bookings, follow official forecasts before departure and keep the accommodation's contact details saved offline.

Does an Antigua and Barbuda plan include Barbuda?

Barbuda is part of the same country, so it falls inside the territory of a plan written for Antigua and Barbuda; check that the offer names the country rather than a regional grouping. Territory and reception are separate questions, though. Barbuda is flat and sparsely settled, and what a handset finds at a remote beach or out on the lagoon can vary with the device and the exact spot. Save the day's meeting points, the return time and a map before leaving Antigua.

Can I combine Antigua with Montserrat or other islands?

Yes, and it is a common addition. Montserrat, a British Overseas Territory, is reached from Antigua by small plane or ferry, depending on the current schedule, and regional flights connect Antigua with many neighbouring islands. Each of those is a separate territory from Antigua and Barbuda. Before the hop, read the destination list on the offer, and either choose one that names every island on the route or carry a separate plan for the extra stop.

Why might the data line drop on the Atlantic side or at sea?

Exposed headlands, the hills inland and the water between Antigua and Barbuda are the places where a signal is most likely to fade, and the result can vary by handset, plan and exact location. First check the basics: the travel line is on, it is selected for mobile data, and data roaming is enabled for it. If the problem continues, try again once back in St John's or at the hotel, and keep tickets, the boat's departure point and maps saved offline so nothing depends on a live connection.

Will Horizon slow down my data?

No. Horizon fixed-data plans have no throttling. There is no daily limit that slows you down, so you can use your whole plan in one day if you need to. Your speed depends on the local network, your signal and how busy the network is. When your data allowance is used up, the plan stops rather than slowing down.

Can I get a refund if I already used some data?

Yes. We always refund the full amount you paid when you request it, whether your eSIM is unused, partly used or fully used. There is no time limit for requesting a refund.
