British Virgin Islands eSIM for Tortola and the sailing islands

Compare British Virgin Islands eSIM plans for Road Town and Cane Garden Bay on Tortola, The Baths on Virgin Gorda, White Bay on Jost Van Dyke and the reef-ringed flats of Anegada. Count the boat days, and check the territory before any hop to the US Virgin Islands next door.

The British Virgin Islands are a British Overseas Territory of dozens of islands and cays east of Puerto Rico, gathered around the sheltered Sir Francis Drake Channel that makes them one of the world's best-known sailing grounds. Tortola, the largest island, holds Road Town, the capital, and most residents. Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke and flat, coral-built Anegada are the other main islands. The US Virgin Islands lie just to the west, close enough that ferries cross between them in about an hour or less, though the crossing is an international border. Traffic drives on the left.

How eSIM works in Virgin Islands, British

Install the British Virgin Islands profile at home over Wi-Fi and keep the order details somewhere other than the phone. Many travellers fly into St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands and take a ferry to Tortola; that first stretch is a different territory, so keep the travel line off until you have cleared immigration in the BVI. Then switch it on, set it for mobile data and enable data roaming for that line. Buying and installing do not start the clock; the first connection to a supported network in the British Virgin Islands does. Save ferry times, charter plans and marina details offline before the first crossing.

Size it to your trip

Pick the profile closest to your trip. The estimate assumes normal use — maps, messaging, photos, a short call home.

As a rule of thumb, a 3–4 day city break runs on about 1–3 GB, a one-week trip on 3–5 GB, a two-week multi-country tour on 8–12 GB, and working on the road takes about 1 GB a day, so 15 GB or more for two weeks.

In total, a 10 GB data allowance covers roughly 3,300 shared photos, 167 hours of social media and browsing, 29 hours of video calls, 125 hours of music streaming, or about 2000 hours of maps and navigation. Messaging apps barely use data.

Road Town

Road Town, on Tortola's south coast, is the capital and the territory's commercial centre, with government offices, banks, the main ferry dock and several of the big yacht-charter marinas around its harbour. The J. R. O'Neal Botanic Gardens offer a quiet green corner in town. Up behind it, Sage Mountain National Park protects a patch of forest around the highest point in the Virgin Islands. Roads over the hills are steep and slow, so give any transfer a margin and save the address and ferry time offline.

Why Horizon

Choose for the charter days and the border

A sailing charter spends most of the week moving between anchorages, a villa stay on Tortola mixes beach days with ferry trips, and a cruise call at Road Town lasts a few hours. On a charter, long stretches on the water may have no signal, so offline preparation counts for more than the allowance. Count the days, including arrival and departure, before choosing the validity, and check that the offer names the British Virgin Islands. St Thomas and St John are in the US Virgin Islands, a separate territory.

Frequently asked questions

Does a British Virgin Islands plan cover St Thomas or St John?

No. St Thomas and St John belong to the US Virgin Islands, a territory of the United States, while the BVI are a British Overseas Territory. The two are only a short boat ride apart, and many trips start with a flight to St Thomas and a ferry to Tortola, but each side of the channel is a separate territory with its own immigration. Read the destination list on the offer, and either choose one that names both, or arrange a separate plan for the US side.

How do the ferries between the islands work?

Ferries link Road Town and West End on Tortola with Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke and Anegada, and others cross to St Thomas and St John in the US Virgin Islands. Some routes run several times a day, others only on certain days, and timetables change with the season. Arrive early at the dock, especially for border crossings that involve immigration. Save the timetable, your ticket and the address at the other end offline before you leave the hotel.

Is The Baths worth visiting, and when?

For most visitors, yes; it is the territory's best-known sight. The trail scrambles over and between huge granite boulders, with ladders and rope handholds in places, and wades through shallow pools on the way to Devil's Bay. Arrive early in the morning or late in the day, as cruise ship tours crowd it at midday. Wear shoes with grip, keep the phone in a waterproof pouch and save the taxi or boat pickup point before you set off.

How should I prepare a BVI charter week for patchy data?

Plan as if the boat will often be offline. Around Road Town, Virgin Gorda and the busier anchorages a phone may find a signal, but on open water and in remote anchorages it may not, and that varies with the handset, the plan and the exact spot. Before leaving the marina, download cruising guides, mooring information, restaurant bookings and the week's plans. Charter companies supply the boat's navigation and communication equipment for safety; mobile data is for convenience.

What does hurricane season mean for the BVI?

The Atlantic season runs from 1 June to 30 November, and Hurricane Irma, which struck in September 2017, caused severe damage across the territory. Many charter companies adjust their fleets and contracts around these months, and some businesses close for part of the autumn. The busiest season runs from December to April. For a summer or autumn trip, choose flexible bookings, follow official forecasts before departure and check that the businesses you rely on are open.

Is Anegada worth a day trip?

It can be, but an overnight is easier. The ferry from Tortola runs only on certain days, and small planes are the other option, so a day trip leaves limited time for the long beaches, the flamingo ponds and a lobster lunch. Distances on the island are bigger than they look, and most visitors hire a car or scooter or use a taxi. Book the return before you go, agree the pickup times with your driver and save everything offline, as services on Anegada are limited.

Why does the phone drop data on the hills or at sea?

Steep hillsides on Tortola, the open water of the channel and remote anchorages are where a signal is most likely to fade, and what a handset finds varies with the device, the plan and the exact spot. Close to the US Virgin Islands, a phone may also pick up a network from the US side. If data fails ashore, check that the travel line is on, selected for mobile data and has data roaming enabled, and look at which network the phone has joined.

Will Horizon slow down my data?

No. Horizon fixed-data plans have no throttling. There is no daily limit that slows you down, so you can use your whole plan in one day if you need to. Your speed depends on the local network, your signal and how busy the network is. When your data allowance is used up, the plan stops rather than slowing down.

Can I get a refund if I already used some data?

Yes. We always refund the full amount you paid when you request it, whether your eSIM is unused, partly used or fully used. There is no time limit for requesting a refund.
