Baku carries two days on its own — the walled Old City, the Heydar Aliyev Center, the Carpet Museum — with a day out to Gobustan or Yanar Dag on top. The north is what stretches the trip: Quba is two and a half to three hours from the capital, Gabala about four, Sheki five or more. Chained as a loop rather than three separate returns to Baku, the northern towns add three to four days, which puts an unhurried first visit at around a week.

Plan an overnight. Sheki is 300 to 325 kilometres from Baku depending on the route and five to five and a half hours each way, so a day trip means ten or eleven hours in the car before the Khan's Palace and the caravanserai have been seen at all. The town works far better inside the northern loop, approached from Gabala 83 kilometres away, about an hour and a quarter, with a night in the old town.

They answer different questions. Sheki is the heritage stop: the Khan's Palace of 1797 with its shebeke stained glass, the large eighteenth-century caravanserai, the old town — and it is the farther one, five hours or more from Baku. Gabala is the outdoor stop, about 225 kilometres and four hours out, with the Tufandag cable car and its December-to-March ski season, the Seven Beauties Waterfall and forest walking. Shorter trip or snow, take Gabala; Silk Road architecture, take Sheki.

They pull in opposite directions. The north is cooler and greener, with snow lying longer at altitude and a ski season at Tufandag from roughly December to March, while April to June and September to October are the mild, dry months for touring it. The Absheron beaches — Novkhani, Bilgah, Mardakan, Buzovna, Zagulba, Pirshagi, and Shikhov nearest the city — swim from June to September, when the Caspian reaches about 25-26°C. Expect light grey sand, calm water, no surf, and wind: Baku is windy year-round.

Both are nearby day trips from the capital rather than places to stay, which is what makes the pairing tempting. Gobustan is petroglyphs and mud volcanoes in open steppe and hill country outside the city; Yanar Dag is a hillside where natural gas burns out of the ground. Whether the two fit into one half day depends on the transport you arrange and the time each stop takes, so settle that with the driver first and save the route offline before leaving Baku.

Georgia can form a second part of a Caucasus itinerary, but do not assume a particular land or rail crossing is available to every traveller. Check current official border and entry information for your nationality, direction of travel and transport mode, then confirm the operator's service close to departure. For data, look for Georgia by name in the selected plan's destination list; an Azerbaijan plan or a regional heading alone does not establish coverage there.

A car or hired driver can help connect Sheki, Gabala and Quba, but confirm each road stage before booking a loop. Do not infer a short direct route from the map, especially between Gabala and Quba. If using public transport, check the operator’s current routes and connections separately. Save the road to Khinalig and the mountain stretches above Quba offline, where reception may vary.
