Azerbaijan eSIM for Baku, the Absheron shore and the Caucasus loop

Compare Azerbaijan eSIM plans for Baku and the Absheron beaches, the Silk Road town of Sheki, the Tufandag cable car above Gabala and the forest valleys behind Quba. Size the data against the driving hours, then check the territory and hotspot terms the offer itself states.

Azerbaijan combines two different landscapes. Baku stands on the flat, built-up Absheron Peninsula in the Caspian Sea, with industrial areas and beach villages; buildings, local conditions and network coverage can still affect reception there. The northern route climbs into the Greater Caucasus: Quba is roughly 170–177 kilometres from Baku, Gabala about four hours by road and Sheki five hours or more. The corridor crosses semi-arid plain before entering forested foothills. Download the mountain routes over Wi-Fi before leaving your accommodation.

How eSIM works in Azerbaijan

Set the Azerbaijan profile up at home over Wi-Fi, days before the flight, and keep the order confirmation somewhere other than the handset you are travelling with. Heydar Aliyev International lies twenty to twenty-five kilometres northeast of central Baku, and a taxi or booked transfer covers the airport highway in about the same twenty to twenty-five minutes — no window in which to rescue a profile you skipped. Do whatever step the offer names to make it the mobile-data line, then turn the home contract's data off so nothing is billed behind your back.

  2. Install your eSIM

  3. Land & connect

Size it to your trip

Pick the profile closest to your trip. The estimate assumes normal use — maps, messaging, photos, a short call home.

As a rule of thumb, a 3–4 day city break runs on about 1–3 GB, a one-week trip on 3–5 GB, a two-week multi-country tour on 8–12 GB, and working on the road takes about 1 GB a day, so 15 GB or more for two weeks.

In total, a 3 GB data allowance covers roughly 1,000 shared photos, 50 hours of social media and browsing, 8.8 hours of video calls, 38 hours of music streaming, or about 600 hours of maps and navigation. Messaging apps barely use data.

Baku

Baku holds the UNESCO-listed walled Old City, Icherisheher, with the Maiden Tower and the Shirvanshahs' Palace, alongside the Flame Towers, Zaha Hadid's Heydar Aliyev Center and the Carpet Museum. Gobustan's petroglyphs and mud volcanoes and the natural gas flames at Yanar Dag are trips from the capital. Absheron's flat, built-up setting differs from the northern mountains, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted reception; buildings, the network and your exact location still matter. Save the day's route before setting out.

Baku eSIM — set up before you fly

Why Horizon

Size it for the loop, not for Baku alone

A short stay is Baku and the Absheron beaches; anything longer becomes the northern loop, and the loop is what the days and the data should be sized around. Set aside a separate transfer day for Quba when planning from Gabala, using the road and travel time your driver or operator confirms. Season shifts the answer as much as distance does: April to June and September to October are the mild, dry months, June to September is the Caspian swimming window, and Tufandag holds a ski season from about December to March. What a plan does on the ground varies with the offer, the handset and where you happen to be standing — a forested valley above Quba is not the open Absheron plain — so read the terms rather than the headline. If Georgia joins the itinerary, look for Georgia by name on the plan's own destination list.

Frequently asked questions

How many days does Baku plus the northern loop need?

Baku carries two days on its own — the walled Old City, the Heydar Aliyev Center, the Carpet Museum — with a day out to Gobustan or Yanar Dag on top. The north is what stretches the trip: Quba is two and a half to three hours from the capital, Gabala about four, Sheki five or more. Chained as a loop rather than three separate returns to Baku, the northern towns add three to four days, which puts an unhurried first visit at around a week.

Is Sheki a realistic day trip from Baku, or does it need an overnight?

Plan an overnight. Sheki is 300 to 325 kilometres from Baku depending on the route and five to five and a half hours each way, so a day trip means ten or eleven hours in the car before the Khan's Palace and the caravanserai have been seen at all. The town works far better inside the northern loop, approached from Gabala 83 kilometres away, about an hour and a quarter, with a night in the old town.

Gabala or Sheki, if there is only time for one mountain town?

They answer different questions. Sheki is the heritage stop: the Khan's Palace of 1797 with its shebeke stained glass, the large eighteenth-century caravanserai, the old town — and it is the farther one, five hours or more from Baku. Gabala is the outdoor stop, about 225 kilometres and four hours out, with the Tufandag cable car and its December-to-March ski season, the Seven Beauties Waterfall and forest walking. Shorter trip or snow, take Gabala; Silk Road architecture, take Sheki.

When is the best season for the northern mountains, and when for the Absheron beaches?

They pull in opposite directions. The north is cooler and greener, with snow lying longer at altitude and a ski season at Tufandag from roughly December to March, while April to June and September to October are the mild, dry months for touring it. The Absheron beaches — Novkhani, Bilgah, Mardakan, Buzovna, Zagulba, Pirshagi, and Shikhov nearest the city — swim from June to September, when the Caspian reaches about 25-26°C. Expect light grey sand, calm water, no surf, and wind: Baku is windy year-round.

Can Gobustan and Yanar Dag be seen on the same trip out of Baku?

Both are nearby day trips from the capital rather than places to stay, which is what makes the pairing tempting. Gobustan is petroglyphs and mud volcanoes in open steppe and hill country outside the city; Yanar Dag is a hillside where natural gas burns out of the ground. Whether the two fit into one half day depends on the transport you arrange and the time each stop takes, so settle that with the driver first and save the route offline before leaving Baku.

Can Azerbaijan and Georgia be combined in one Caucasus itinerary?

Georgia can form a second part of a Caucasus itinerary, but do not assume a particular land or rail crossing is available to every traveller. Check current official border and entry information for your nationality, direction of travel and transport mode, then confirm the operator's service close to departure. For data, look for Georgia by name in the selected plan's destination list; an Azerbaijan plan or a regional heading alone does not establish coverage there.

Is a driver needed for the Sheki, Gabala and Quba loop, or does public transport work?

A car or hired driver can help connect Sheki, Gabala and Quba, but confirm each road stage before booking a loop. Do not infer a short direct route from the map, especially between Gabala and Quba. If using public transport, check the operator’s current routes and connections separately. Save the road to Khinalig and the mountain stretches above Quba offline, where reception may vary.
