Dominica eSIM for Roseau, the rainforest trails and Portsmouth

Compare Dominica eSIM plans for Roseau, the waterfalls and hot springs of the Roseau Valley, Morne Trois Pitons National Park, the Kalinago Territory and Portsmouth in the north. Weigh the data against mountain roads and trail days, then check the territory on the offer.

Dominica is a steep, volcanic island between Guadeloupe and Martinique, covered in rainforest and crossed by rivers, and it is not the Dominican Republic, which is a different country on another island. Its interior rises to mountains above 1,400 metres, and Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, protects the heart of it. Douglas-Charles Airport is on the north-east coast, so most arrivals face a winding drive of well over an hour to Roseau on the south-west coast. Hurricane Maria in 2017 caused severe damage across the whole island.

How eSIM works in Dominica

Install the Dominica profile at home over Wi-Fi, with the order details kept somewhere other than the phone you are configuring. After landing at Douglas-Charles, switch the travel line on, choose it for mobile data and enable data roaming for it, and set the home line's data to off. Buying and installing do not start the clock; the first connection to a supported network in Dominica does. Before the long drive to Roseau or any trail day, save the route, the guide's contact and the trailhead location offline, because the valleys and gorges are where a phone is most likely to lose its signal.

Pick a destination, data allowance and validity period.

  2. Install your eSIM

Scan the QR or auto-install in the app — no physical SIM.

  3. Land & connect

Size it to your trip

Pick the profile closest to your trip. The estimate assumes normal use — maps, messaging, photos, a short call home.

As a rule of thumb, a 3–4 day city break runs on about 1–3 GB, a one-week trip on 3–5 GB, a two-week multi-country tour on 8–12 GB, and working on the road takes about 1 GB a day, so 15 GB or more for two weeks.

In total, a 10 GB data allowance covers roughly 3,300 shared photos, 167 hours of social media and browsing, 29 hours of video calls, 125 hours of music streaming, or about 2000 hours of maps and navigation. Messaging apps barely use data.

Important cities in Dominica

Roseau · City guide

Roseau

Roseau is the small, busy capital on the south-west coast, with wooden and stone buildings from the colonial era, the Old Market and a cruise berth on the waterfront. The Botanic Gardens hold a school bus still pinned under the African baobab that fell on it during Hurricane David in 1979. Morne Bruce gives a view over the town, and the snorkelling at Champagne Reef, where volcanic gas bubbles up through the water, is a short drive south. Traffic in the narrow streets is slow, so save pickups and addresses offline.

Roseau eSIM — set up before you fly

Why Horizon

Choose for trail days and mountain roads

A cruise call in Roseau is a few hours of town, gardens and a waterfall, while a week on Dominica fills up with trail days, river trips, dives and long drives between valleys. Count the days on the island, including arrival and departure, before choosing the validity, and check that the offer names Dominica itself, not the Dominican Republic. Ferries link Roseau with Guadeloupe and Martinique, both part of France, so a hop to either is a separate territory that needs its own plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is Dominica the same as the Dominican Republic?

No. Dominica is a small island nation in the eastern Caribbean, between Guadeloupe and Martinique, while the Dominican Republic shares the large island of Hispaniola with Haiti, hundreds of kilometres to the north-west. They are separate countries with separate plans, and the names are easy to mix up when booking. Check that the offer you choose names Dominica, and if your trip includes both countries, arrange a plan for each one.

How hard is the hike to the Boiling Lake?

It is a long, demanding day. The trail starts near Titou Gorge at Laudat and climbs over ridges, down into the Valley of Desolation with its steaming vents, and on to the lake, a flooded fumarole that sits in a cloud of steam. Most hikers take the better part of a day for the return trip and use a licensed guide, as the route is muddy, steep and changeable. Start early, carry water and rain gear, and save the guide's contact and the trail details offline.

Which airport should I fly into for Dominica?

Most flights land at Douglas-Charles Airport on the north-east coast. From there, Roseau and the south-west coast are a winding drive of well over an hour across or around the mountains. Canefield Airport, just north of Roseau, handles only small aircraft. Book the transfer in advance, especially for evening arrivals, and keep the driver's contact and your accommodation address saved offline, since the road passes through hills where reception can come and go.

Can I take a ferry from Dominica to Guadeloupe or Martinique?

Yes. A fast ferry service links Roseau with Guadeloupe to the north and Martinique to the south, and some sailings continue to Saint Lucia. Guadeloupe and Martinique are overseas regions of France, which makes them separate territories from Dominica, with their own entry rules. A plan written for Dominica does not continue across the water, so read the destination list on the offer and either choose one that names each stop or arrange a separate plan for the French islands.

What does hurricane season mean for Dominica?

The Atlantic season runs from 1 June to 30 November, and Dominica knows its cost: Hurricane Maria struck as a category 5 storm in September 2017 and damaged most buildings on the island. Heavy rain at any time of year can also trigger landslides on mountain roads. The drier months, roughly February to May, are the usual choice for hiking. Whatever the date, follow official forecasts before travelling, choose flexible bookings and ask guides about trail conditions the day before a hike.

Is driving on Dominica difficult?

It takes care. Roads climb and twist through the mountains, many are narrow with sharp bends and steep drops, and traffic drives on the left. Rain can leave rockfall or mud on the road, and journeys take far longer than the distances suggest. Many visitors prefer taxis or guided tours, at least for the first days. If you do drive, check the local permit requirements before collecting the car, travel in daylight where possible and download the route before you set off.

Why does the phone lose its signal in the valleys?

Dominica's steep valleys, gorges and forested ridges are classic places for a mobile signal to fade, and what a handset finds there can vary with the device, the plan and the exact spot. That is a property of the terrain, not necessarily a fault. When you are back on open ground, check that the travel line is switched on, selected for mobile data and has data roaming enabled, then restart the phone. On trail days, rely on maps and contacts saved before leaving.

Will Horizon slow down my data?

No. Horizon fixed-data plans have no throttling. There is no daily limit that slows you down, so you can use your whole plan in one day if you need to. Your speed depends on the local network, your signal and how busy the network is. When your data allowance is used up, the plan stops rather than slowing down.

Can I get a refund if I already used some data?

Yes. We always refund the full amount you paid when you request it, whether your eSIM is unused, partly used or fully used. There is no time limit for requesting a refund.
