Kenya eSIM for Nairobi arrivals and Mombasa stays

Compare Kenya eSIM plans for a Nairobi arrival, a booked park visit and the train journey to Mombasa.

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Wilson Airport are separate Nairobi gateways, while a booked visit to Nairobi National Park has its own meeting point. Rail adds another distinction: Nairobi Central and Nairobi Terminus are different stops, and their link is separate from the Madaraka Express journey to Mombasa Terminus. Save the correct airport or station, park pickup and onward coast address before each stage.

How eSIM works in Kenya

Set up the eSIM on dependable Wi-Fi and retain the guide outside the handset. Keep the line disabled until Kenya, then choose Horizon for data and enable roaming on it. For this Kenya product, the first successful connection to a supported network in the included destination starts the selected validity. Leave home-SIM roaming off unless you deliberately accept its charges. Download the rail ticket and park meeting details before leaving Wi-Fi; the country listing does not promise reception on the train or inside a park.

  1. Buy a plan

Pick a destination, data allowance and validity period.

  2. Install your eSIM

Scan the QR or auto-install in the app — no physical SIM.

  3. Land & connect

Data activates on first connection at your destination.

Size it to your trip

Pick the profile closest to your trip. The estimate assumes normal use — maps, messaging, photos, a short call home.

As a rule of thumb, a 3–4 day city break runs on about 1–3 GB, a one-week trip on 3–5 GB, a two-week multi-country tour on 8–12 GB, and working on the road takes about 1 GB a day, so 15 GB or more for two weeks.

In total, a 20 GB data allowance covers roughly 6,700 shared photos, 333 hours of social media and browsing, 59 hours of video calls, 250 hours of music streaming, or about 4000 hours of maps and navigation. Messaging apps barely use data.

Nairobi eSIM — set up before you fly

Why Horizon

Choose a Kenya eSIM for the whole journey

Count the Nairobi arrival, park day, train journey and Mombasa stay. Choose enough data for booking updates, guide messages, photos, internet calls and hotspot use, with validity for every travel day. Kenya must appear in the exact country plan. It is outside Horizon's current six-destination Africa package, and a Kenya plan does not establish service in Tanzania or Uganda. Check each border country separately.

Frequently asked questions

Which Nairobi airport and rail station should I save?

Use the exact flight and rail bookings. Jomo Kenyatta International and Wilson are separate airports; Nairobi Central and Nairobi Terminus are separate stations linked by another train stage.

Does a Kenya eSIM guarantee reception on safari or on the train?

No. A Kenya listing identifies intended territory, not reception at every rail segment or place inside a park. Save tickets, guide contacts and meeting details before the journey.

How do I size data for a Nairobi and Mombasa trip?

Start with validity for the entire trip. Choose enough data for booking checks, driver or guide messages, photos, internet calls, laptop work and hotspot sharing.

Does a Kenya plan continue into Tanzania or Uganda?

Do not assume so. Kenya is not in Horizon's current six-destination Africa package, and a country plan establishes only its listed territory. Check Tanzania, Uganda and every other stop by name before buying.

Can I keep my number and use a hotspot with a Kenya eSIM?

A compatible dual-SIM phone can keep the home SIM installed, although its provider may charge for any service you leave active. Horizon supplies data only and no local number. Hotspot sharing is free on every Horizon plan. It uses the same allowance without throttling.

When should I install and start the Kenya eSIM?

Install it on reliable Wi-Fi before travel and leave the line off until Kenya. Installing early does not use the selected period; it begins when the eSIM first connects successfully to a supported network in Kenya.

Does the Kenya eSIM include calls and texts?

No. Horizon plans are data-only, with no phone number for calls or texts. Use apps such as WhatsApp or FaceTime over the eSIM's data, or keep your usual SIM on for ordinary calls and texts.

Do I need to turn on data roaming for the Kenya eSIM?

Yes. A travel eSIM connects to local networks as a roaming line, so turn on data roaming for the Horizon eSIM when you arrive. The plan is prepaid, so Horizon does not bill you after checkout. Keep data roaming off on your usual SIM to avoid charges from your home carrier.

What happens if I run out of data on the Kenya eSIM?

You can buy more. If your plan supports a top-up, My eSIMs shows the data you can add to the same eSIM. If it does not, buy another Kenya plan and install it the same way.

Will my phone work with the Kenya eSIM?

It will if your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to your home carrier. Many recent iPhone and Android models do, but some regional versions do not, so check your exact model on the supported devices page before you buy.

See supported devices
Will Horizon slow down my data?

No. Horizon fixed-data plans have no throttling. There is no daily limit that slows you down, so you can use your whole plan in one day if you need to. Your speed depends on the local network, your signal and how busy the network is. When your data allowance is used up, the plan stops rather than slowing down.

Can I get a refund if I already used some data?

Yes. We always refund the full amount you paid when you request it, whether your eSIM is unused, partly used or fully used. There is no time limit for requesting a refund.
