“The eSIM worked perfectly during my trip around Europe. It was very easy to install, connected as soon as I arrived, and the internet was fast and reliable everywhere I went. It made travelling much easier because I did not need to buy local SIM cards. Very convenient and worth the price. I would definitely use it again.”

Lithuania eSIM for Vilnius, Trakai and the Curonian Spit

Compare Lithuania eSIM plans for Vilnius Old Town and the island castle at Trakai, for Kaunas, and for Klaipėda with the ferry across to the Curonian Spit. Set the days you will actually be moving against the data you expect to use, then read the territory wording printed on the offer itself.

Lithuania is compact and almost entirely flat, which changes what a data plan has to cope with here. Trakai and its island castle sit about 27 kilometres west of Vilnius, roughly half an hour by road or a direct train of around 34 minutes; Kaunas is about 103 kilometres away, an hour on the fast train. The long leg runs west, and Vilnius to Klaipėda is around 306 kilometres — close to two hours fifty by car, nearer four by rail — which is why the coast is usually reached by car, coach or train. Reception depends on the plan, handset, partner network and exact location, including pine forests, dunes and coastal water crossings.

How eSIM works in Lithuania

Install the Lithuania profile before departure, using a connection you trust, and keep the purchase confirmation somewhere other than the handset it is going onto. Validity does not start until the eSIM first connects to a supported mobile network in Lithuania; follow the plan’s instructions for selecting the data line rather than a habit carried over from another trip. Vilnius Airport is about six kilometres south of the centre and a direct train reaches the city in around eight minutes, with buses and taxis taking fifteen to twenty. Kaunas Airport lies roughly fourteen kilometres northeast of the centre, linked by express bus, and Palanga Airport serves the coast, a twenty-five to thirty minute drive from Klaipėda. Leave the home contract’s data switched off unless being billed for it is a decision you have made.

Size it to your trip

Pick the profile closest to your trip. The estimate assumes normal use — maps, messaging, photos, a short call home.

As a rule of thumb, a 3–4 day city break runs on about 1–3 GB, a one-week trip on 3–5 GB, a two-week multi-country tour on 8–12 GB, and working on the road takes about 1 GB a day, so 15 GB or more for two weeks.

In total, a 10 GB data allowance covers roughly 3,300 shared photos, 167 hours of social media and browsing, 29 hours of video calls, 125 hours of music streaming, or about 2000 hours of maps and navigation. Messaging apps barely use data.

Vilnius

Vilnius keeps almost everything a first visit wants inside one walkable core. The Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, holding Vilnius Cathedral, the Gates of Dawn and Gediminas Tower on Castle Hill, with Užupis, the self-declared artists’ district, just across the river. The city has no metro and transport includes buses and trolleybuses at street level, but buildings, local coverage and network conditions can still affect a phone signal. The airport is six kilometres south, with a train into the centre in around eight minutes.

Vilnius eSIM — set up before you fly

Why Horizon

Choose by whether the coast is in the trip

A stay of three or four days is enough for Vilnius with Trakai as a half-day trip out; adding Kaunas and the Klaipėda coast pushes the same route towards seven or eight days, which is where a short validity window runs out first. May, June and September are the mild sightseeing months. July and August belong to the coast, when the Baltic peaks at about 18°C and the swimming window is at its most reliable from the last week of July into mid-August. January and February sit at the other extreme, with average highs around minus one to minus three and snow normal from December to March. What a handset manages here is set by the plan, the device and the surroundings — dense pine on the spit, open water either side of the lagoon — rather than by tunnels or altitude.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Curonian Spit a day trip from Klaipėda?

Yes, and it is the usual way to see it. There is no bridge: the crossing from Klaipėda to Smiltynė is a short ferry over the strait, the Old Ferry carrying pedestrians and cyclists and the New Ferry carrying vehicles. From Smiltynė the road runs south along the peninsula towards Nida. The spit is a national park of shifting sand dunes and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so build the day around ferry times rather than around driving distance.

Is Trakai a half-day or a full-day trip from Vilnius?

Half a day is the usual answer. A direct train covers the 27 kilometres in around 34 minutes, buses run the same route, and organised tours cover it too; by car it is thirty to thirty-five minutes. The island castle on Lake Galvė and its history museum are what people come for, and the wooden Karaim houses along the main street add another short walk. A full day only makes sense if the lake itself is the plan.

Which Lithuanian city should I base in?

It depends which half of the country you want. Vilnius is the base for the capital's Old Town and the Trakai day trip, and its airport is six kilometres from the centre with a train in around eight minutes. Klaipėda or Palanga is the better choice if the coast and the Curonian Spit are the priority, because the ferry to Smiltynė leaves from Klaipėda and Palanga Airport is on that side of the country.

How many days does Lithuania need?

A stay of three or four days covers Vilnius properly, with Trakai as a half-day trip out. Seven or eight is the figure once Kaunas and the Klaipėda coast are added, because the western leg is long — about 306 kilometres from Vilnius to Klaipėda. Match the validity of the plan to the whole trip rather than to the sightseeing days, and if the route carries on into a neighbouring country, check that country is named on the offer instead of assuming it is covered.

Train or car for getting around Lithuania?

The train wins on the Vilnius to Kaunas corridor: about 103 kilometres, roughly an hour on the fast service, with departure times to check in the current operator timetable. West of that it stops being true. Vilnius to Klaipėda is close to four hours by rail and around three hours fifty by coach against about two hours fifty by car, so car, coach and train are the options to compare for reaching the coast.

When is the best season to visit Lithuania?

May, June and September are the mild sightseeing months, warm enough to walk the Old Towns without high-summer crowds. July and August are for the coast: the Baltic peaks at about 18°C in late July and August, with June and September nearer 16°C, and the swimming season runs essentially from June to September. January and February are the cold end, with average highs around minus one to minus three and snow normal from December through March.

Is Vilnius Old Town walkable?

Yes. The historic core is compact and covered on foot, with Vilnius Cathedral, the Gates of Dawn and Gediminas Tower on Castle Hill all inside it and Užupis a short walk over the river. The city has no metro, so public transport runs at street level on buses and trolleybuses, but that does not guarantee uninterrupted reception. If the connection stalls, confirm the profile is the selected data line, follow the plan’s guide for restarting or choosing a network manually, and contact support if the problem continues.

Can I keep my WhatsApp and phone number with the Lithuania eSIM?

Yes. WhatsApp stays linked to your usual number and runs on the eSIM's data. On a dual-SIM phone, your usual SIM can stay on for ordinary calls and texts. Your home carrier may charge for calls, texts or data on that line, so turn off data roaming there.

Does the Lithuania eSIM include calls and texts?

No. Horizon plans are data-only, with no phone number for calls or texts. Use apps such as WhatsApp or FaceTime over the eSIM's data, or keep your usual SIM on for ordinary calls and texts.

Do I need to turn on data roaming for the Lithuania eSIM?

Yes. A travel eSIM connects to local networks as a roaming line, so turn on data roaming for the Horizon eSIM when you arrive. The plan is prepaid, so Horizon does not bill you after checkout. Keep data roaming off on your usual SIM to avoid charges from your home carrier.

What happens if I run out of data on the Lithuania eSIM?

You can buy more. If your plan supports a top-up, My eSIMs shows the data you can add to the same eSIM. If it does not, buy another Lithuania plan and install it the same way.

Will my phone work with the Lithuania eSIM?

It will if your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to your home carrier. Many recent iPhone and Android models do, but some regional versions do not, so check your exact model on the supported devices page before you buy.

See supported devices
Will Horizon slow down my data?

No. Horizon fixed-data plans have no throttling. There is no daily limit that slows you down, so you can use your whole plan in one day if you need to. Your speed depends on the local network, your signal and how busy the network is. When your data allowance is used up, the plan stops rather than slowing down.

Can I get a refund if I already used some data?

Yes. We always refund the full amount you paid when you request it, whether your eSIM is unused, partly used or fully used. There is no time limit for requesting a refund.
