Vilnius keeps almost everything a first visit wants inside one walkable core. The city has no metro and transport includes buses and trolleybuses at street level, but buildings, local coverage and network conditions can still affect a phone signal. Kaunas is the second city and an easy hour from Vilnius on the fast train, about 103 kilometres west. A stay of three or four days is enough for Vilnius with Trakai as a half-day trip out; adding Kaunas and the Klaipėda coast pushes the same route towards seven or eight days, which is where a short validity window runs out first. May, June and September are the mild sightseeing months. July and August belong to the coast, when the Baltic peaks at about 18°C and the swimming window is at its most reliable from the last week of July into mid-August. January and February sit at the other extreme, with average highs around minus one to minus three and snow normal from December to March. Is the Curonian Spit a day trip from Klaipėda?
Yes, and it is the usual way to see it. There is no bridge: the crossing from Klaipėda to Smiltynė is a short ferry over the strait, the Old Ferry carrying pedestrians and cyclists and the New Ferry carrying vehicles. From Smiltynė the road runs south along the peninsula towards Nida. The spit is a national park of shifting sand dunes and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so build the day around ferry times rather than around driving distance.
Is Trakai a half-day or a full-day trip from Vilnius?
Half a day is the usual answer. A direct train covers the 27 kilometres in around 34 minutes, buses run the same route, and organised tours cover it too; by car it is thirty to thirty-five minutes. The island castle on Lake Galvė and its history museum are what people come for, and the wooden Karaim houses along the main street add another short walk. A full day only makes sense if the lake itself is the plan.
Which Lithuanian city should I base in?
It depends which half of the country you want. Vilnius is the base for the capital's Old Town and the Trakai day trip, and its airport is six kilometres from the centre with a train in around eight minutes. Klaipėda or Palanga is the better choice if the coast and the Curonian Spit are the priority, because the ferry to Smiltynė leaves from Klaipėda and Palanga Airport is on that side of the country.
