Both work, and the crossing decides which. There is no fixed link — the proposed tunnel was shelved — so it is the twenty-five-minute Ċirkewwa to Mġarr car ferry over about six kilometres, or a passenger fast ferry from Valletta in roughly forty-five minutes. Door to door from Valletta is an hour and three quarters to two hours each way, which eats a good part of a day trip. If Ġgantija, the Cittadella, Ta' Pinu and Dwejra all matter to you, two or three nights on the island is the better shape.

Four to seven days is the usual span. Four covers Valletta, Mdina and Rabat, and a beach afternoon; seven adds Gozo properly plus Comino and time to slow down. Nothing is far in kilometres — Valletta to Mdina is thirteen and a half, to Ċirkewwa twenty-five, to Marsaxlokk thirteen — so the pace is set by ferries and buses rather than driving. Build the itinerary around how many water crossings each day contains and it will hold together.

A trip covering towns and main sights can rely on buses and ferries; Malta has no railway or metro. Check the current Airport Direct network: TD4 for Valletta and Gozo Fast Ferry, TD3 for Sliema and St Julian's, TD1 for Ċirkewwa, and other services according to the destination. The harbour ferry may suit a Valletta–Sliema journey when operating. A car helps for the Dingli Cliffs, quieter bays and Gozo travel, but roads may be narrow and parking limited. Choose according to actual stops and current timetables.

Valletta puts you inside the UNESCO city, within walking distance of the co-cathedral, the Grandmaster's Palace and Fort St Elmo, with the harbour ferries at the bottom of the hill. Sliema and St Julian's give a seafront promenade, rocky lidos and more places to eat, and the ferry gets you to Valletta in five to ten minutes anyway. Gozo suits a slower, quieter trip but adds the crossing to everything on the main island. A common pattern is a few nights on Malta then two on Gozo, rather than commuting.

July and August are generally hotter and busier, while May and October may suit a quieter pace for exploring towns. The sea may remain warm in autumn, but temperature alone does not establish safe swimming or calm seas, and shoulder months do not guarantee no rain. Check local forecasts, warnings, beach flags and ferry status on the day, and retain an alternative activity if conditions change.

Sandy options include Mellieħa Bay, also called Għadira, Golden Bay and neighbouring Għajn Tuffieħa reached by steps, and Ramla l-Ħamra on Gozo with its red-orange sand. Comino also has sandy Santa Marija Bay; Blue Lagoon combines rocky shore areas and water over a sandy seabed, so do not expect a broad sandy beach. Check current visitor-booking requirements before going. St Peter's Pool near Marsaxlokk is a rocky site. Choose by access and sea conditions rather than photographs alone.

Reception may vary inside underground sites or aboard boats, but location alone does not identify why data is unavailable. Malta visits include the three underground levels and timed entry at Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, Lascaris War Rooms below Valletta's bastions, St Paul's Catacombs in Rabat, Għar Dalam, and Xerri's Grotto and Ninu's Cave at Xagħra on Gozo. Small boats reach the Blue Grotto from Wied iż-Żurrieq. Save tickets and return details in advance and check again after exiting safely.
