The Miraflores Locks are the usual answer, and they sit on the northwestern edge of Panama City, so a half day genuinely covers it. The visitor centre has terraces that look straight down into the lock chambers, and what you see depends on a vessel being in transit while you are there, so it is worth checking the day's schedule before setting out. Pair it with Casco Viejo or the Amador Causeway and the rest of the day fills without leaving the capital.

San Blas, if calm shallow water is the priority. Its islands sit behind reef, the sand is fine and white and the water turquoise and shallow, with very little built on them. Bocas del Toro is the livelier choice: a town on Isla Colón, its own small airport, Bastimentos with Red Frog Beach and Wizard Beach where some breaks carry surf, and the sheltered, shallow Starfish Beach for swimming. Take San Blas for quiet water and Bocas for a place with a town attached.

Most plans land on ten to fourteen days, and it is the spread that dictates it, not the size of the country. Panama City to Boquete is 480 to 490 kilometres and six to seven hours by road. Boquete to Bocas del Toro is another 180 kilometres and three and a half to four hours over the continental divide, plus a ferry or water-taxi leg from Almirante. San Blas is a separate three to four hour run out of the capital. At a week you are picking two.

For the long western leg, often yes. Panama City to Boquete is 480 to 490 kilometres and six to seven hours on the Pan-American Highway, whereas the domestic flight to David takes about an hour and leaves roughly 40 minutes of road into Boquete. Bocas del Toro also has its own small airport on Isla Colón, which spares the overland route — some 180 kilometres and three and a half to four hours from Boquete across the divide, plus the water leg from Almirante.

The difference is the road rather than the islands. The approach from Panama City is roughly 235 kilometres yet still three to four hours each way, because the last stretch is a steep unpaved mountain descent that needs a 4x4 — which is why most visitors book a transfer instead of driving it. A day trip therefore spends much of its time in a vehicle and a boat. An overnight on one of the Guna islands turns that same journey into a small part of the trip.

Cooler and mistier, and the gap surprises people. The lowlands and both coasts stay hot and humid all year, roughly 27 to 32 degrees, while Boquete sits near 1,200 metres and runs about 15 to 24, often under the fine drifting mist locals call bajareque. The dry season, verano, is mid-December to mid-April; the rainy season, invierno, runs May to November and is heaviest in October and November. Hurricanes are rare because Panama lies mostly south of the main belt, though downpours can flood roads.

On the water between the Bocas islands, or out at the Cayos Holandeses, there may simply be nothing to register on, so give the handset a few minutes on land before calling it a fault. If it still shows nothing, confirm the Panama profile is the selected data line and that the offer's setup notes were followed.
