Montenegro eSIM: how much data do you need?
Popular Montenegro plans

For a week in Montenegro — Kotor, Budva, a day up to Durmitor, photos going home every evening — 3 GB is the size that fits, at €2.07 for 30 days. Two weeks, or a trip where you are navigating every day and sharing the connection, is a 5 GB or 10 GB decision. The country is small; the data question is really about how much you stream.

The Montenegro plan ladder

DataValidityPricePer GB
1 GB7 days€0.84€0.84
3 GB7 days€2.07€0.69
3 GB15 days€2.07€0.69
3 GB30 days€2.07€0.69
5 GB7 days€3.32€0.66
5 GB30 days€3.32€0.66
10 GB7 days€6.47€0.65
10 GB30 days€6.47€0.65
20 GB30 days€12.76€0.64

Among the 30-day plans, 3 GB through 10 GB cost about €0.65–0.69 per gigabyte, while 20 GB costs about €0.64. The seven-day options now cost the same as their matching 30-day allowances and expire earlier; compare both data and validity.

The 1 GB starter sits outside that pattern at €0.84 per gigabyte, which makes it a stopover plan rather than a trip plan. A lower one-time introductory price is shown on the plan page where an account is eligible for it.

Two practical notes. 3 GB costs the same at 15 days and at 30 days, so take the 30-day version — the longer window is free. The larger allowances now cost slightly less per gigabyte, but unused data still adds to your total spend.

How much data does a week in Montenegro use?

Rough figures, and they move with your video quality settings and how much hotel wifi you use.

What you are doingRoughly
Turn-by-turn navigation5 MB per hour
Messaging and photos home10–20 MB per day
Web browsing and email30 MB per hour
Social feeds150 MB per hour
Video calls300 MB per hour
Video streaming, standard quality700 MB per hour

A coastal week where you are on wifi at the apartment each night lands around 1.5 to 2 GB. The same week with daily video calls home and feeds on the beach gets you to 4 or 5 GB. If you are working from Kotor with a laptop on the connection, on a compatible device, plan on 10 GB and stop doing arithmetic.

What the single-country plan costs you against the regional one

For 10 GB over 30 days, Montenegro’s own plan costs €6.47, about €0.65 per gigabyte. The Balkans regional plan costs €11.28, about €1.13 per gigabyte, for the same allowance and validity across eleven countries. Choose the coverage that fits your route.

The regional plan earns that gap back the moment your route crosses a border, which happens more often than people plan for: flying into Dubrovnik and driving down the bay is one of the standard ways into Montenegro, and Tirana is the other. One purchase then covers Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia and Turkey. Kosovo is not in that package, but the Balkans plan page lets you add it to the same order as a second eSIM.

For the route-planning side of that decision — where the coast road actually goes and which stops are worth the detour — the Kotor to Budva guide is the better read.

Before you drive into the mountains

The coast and the main roads are one kind of trip. The Durmitor massif, the Tara canyon and the back road over Lovćen are another. Whatever network you are on, download offline maps for those sections before you leave Kotor or Žabljak — it costs nothing, it saves the allowance, and it means a lost signal is an inconvenience rather than a problem.

Short answers

Which size for a week? 3 GB at €2.07 covers a normal week. Go to 5 GB if you video call daily.

Does the plan work in Croatia? No — the Montenegro plan covers Montenegro. For a route through both, buy the regional Balkans plan.

When does the clock start? Not at installation: validity does not start until the eSIM first connects to a supported network in Montenegro, so you can install early without losing days. We explain why other eSIMs can differ in when does an eSIM's validity actually start.

Can I keep my home number? If the phone supports two active lines, yes — keep the home SIM for calls and select Horizon for mobile data, with data roaming turned off on the home line.
